Position Overview

COMMUNITY SUPPORT OFFICER (CSO)
OPEN UNTIL FILLED

Part-Time Role - 29 Hours/Week

The Community Support Officer serves as an auxiliary role to sworn law enforcement personnel by documenting standard police reports, examining traffic incidents, managing traffic flow, enforcing parking regulations, transporting seized property, and performing other law enforcement tasks permissible for non-sworn staff. CSOs will also receive training to substitute for absent school crossing guards as necessary.

Key Responsibilities
  • Works designated shifts that are scheduled to have a CSO on duty five days a week during operational hours. These shifts will be rotated periodically to provide all CSOs with varied experiences.
  • Maintains regular communication via radio or phone for response to diverse situations and emergencies.
  • Executes duties as outlined and permitted under applicable laws and regulations for non-sworn personnel.
  • Monitors city streets in both commercial and residential zones to identify and report on municipal issues (such as damaged roadways or missing signs), as well as other situations requiring police attention. Conducts parking enforcement by issuing citations.
  • Responds to locations where minor offenses have occurred and prepares police reports.
  • Attends the scenes of traffic incidents, preserving evidence and providing assistance as necessary. Conducts investigations, including taking measurements, interviewing involved parties, drafting reports, and issuing traffic citations as warranted.
  • Prepares various reports, including Daily Activity Reports, investigation summaries, Tow Receipts, and Property Receipts.
  • Assists sworn officers at traffic incident scenes with traffic management and vehicle towing. Aids sworn officers at crime scenes in maintaining the integrity of the scene, including setting up barriers and restricting access to authorized personnel only.
  • Provides assistance to motorists by managing traffic, offering jump starts, calling for help, and aiding with lockouts.
  • Substitutes for absent School Crossing Guards as required.
  • Transports seized property and bicycles as needed to support sworn officers.
  • Maintains communication with supervisors and dispatch to coordinate activities and provide assistance during emergencies.
  • Attends traffic court to provide testimony regarding citation matters.
  • Maintains departmental equipment, vehicles, supplies, and facilities.
  • Engages with the public, court officials, and other city representatives in the execution of police operational activities.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Must hold a valid Florida driver's license with a clean driving record.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen.
  • Must possess a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Must demonstrate excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Additional Information
  • Upon hiring, candidates must complete and pass the Community Support Officer Academy.
  • Must meet the department's medical standards.
  • Must exhibit good moral character and maintain industrious habits.
  • Tuition reimbursement is available for college courses in accordance with department policy.
