Acute Care Physician Assistant - Urology

UTHealth Houston's Department of Surgery is seeking an Acute Care Physician Assistant to enhance their Urology team.

The successful candidate will possess experience in Urology procedures within both inpatient and outpatient environments, including but not limited to hospital patient rounds, consultative services, catheter placements, cystoscopies, and pelvic/prostate examinations.

Position Overview:


Deliver advanced medical care to patients facing complex acute, critical, and/or chronic health challenges in a clinical or hospital environment, specializing in one or more areas under physician supervision.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Execute complex, standardized patient care procedures requiring specialized training, typically performed by a physician, without constituting the practice of medicine.
  • Conduct independent and physician-supervised patient rounds.
  • Perform comprehensive patient evaluations and assessments, providing appropriate treatments, including medication management.
  • Coordinate, direct, and implement individualized patient care plans.
  • Assist in gathering patient histories, screening for co-morbidities, and offering guidance on preventative healthcare.
  • Conduct physical examinations and provide episodic or problem-oriented care under physician oversight.
  • Order and interpret relevant laboratory, diagnostic, and radiographic tests.
  • Monitor patient treatment programs and relay pertinent medical information to the attending physician.
  • Facilitate patient education regarding medical processes, medications, nutrition, and health promotion.
  • Support physicians in making therapeutic decisions.
  • Maintain accurate records and prepare documentation for physician review and signature.
  • Manage supplies and equipment effectively.
  • Respond to emergency situations as required.
  • Operate within the scope of practice defined by licensure and certification.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications:


Current Texas Licensure as a Physician Assistant; National Commission of Certification of Physician Assistants certification required.
Basic Life Support (BLS) certification or specialty certification as mandated by the department.

Proficient in the use of medical and surgical instruments and equipment relevant to the role.

Educational Requirements:
Master's degree in Physician Assistant studies.

A Bachelor's degree in Physician Assistant studies with a minimum of two years of relevant professional experience may be considered based on terminal degree requirements at graduation.


Experience Requirements:
No prior experience required; previous experience in the clinical focus area is preferred.

Physical Demands:


Ability to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds constantly to move objects.
