POSITION SUMMARY: This role is essential for supporting the supervision, care, and education of students with special needs within various classroom settings. Responsibilities include assisting in the implementation of instructional plans, monitoring student behavior, providing relevant information to school staff, and performing clerical tasks as needed.

PRIMARY DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Modifies and provides necessary accommodations for classroom activities and materials under the guidance of the teacher to ensure special education students can actively engage in learning.
  • Supports students both inside and outside the classroom (e.g., assisting with personal items, note-taking, building relationships, participating in field trips, and enhancing social skills) to foster their growth and development.
  • Assists students with personal care needs related to medical conditions or physical limitations (e.g., diaper changes, toilet training, lifting, and feeding) to facilitate their functioning in school.
  • Participates in meetings and training sessions (e.g., CPR, educational strategies, specific disability education) to acquire and share relevant information that meets established annual state requirements.
  • Collaborates with educational staff to provide necessary support and updates regarding student progress as outlined in their Individual Education Program (IEP).
  • Implements behavioral strategies designed by the IEP team to support the needs of special education students and maintain a consistent learning environment.
  • Provides assistance to students exhibiting challenging or aggressive behaviors by executing educational and behavioral plans under the supervision of certified staff.
  • Facilitates learning in various activities in both individual and group settings (e.g., academic subjects, social skills, daily living skills) to achieve IEP goals under the direction of certified staff.
  • Maintains instructional materials and records to ensure the availability of resources and accurate information regarding student progress.
  • Supervises students during assigned periods across various school and community environments (e.g., restrooms, playgrounds, hallways, bus loading zones, fire drills, assemblies, cafeteria) to create a safe and conducive learning atmosphere.
Education and Experience Requirements:
  • High School diploma or GED.
  • If the school is classified as Title I, 48 hours of college credit or the ability to pass the Title I assessment test is required.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • SKILLS necessary for performing multiple tasks with a potential need for skill enhancement to adapt to changing job conditions include adhering to safety practices, operating standard office equipment, maintaining accurate records, and utilizing approved crisis intervention techniques.
  • KNOWLEDGE required encompasses basic math, following instructions, and understanding complex, multi-step written and oral directives. Competencies include instructional procedures, age-appropriate activities, safety practices, conflict resolution, and child development stages.
  • ABILITY to schedule activities, collect data, and use job-related equipment. Flexibility is essential for collaboration, data management, and operating equipment using standardized methods. The ability to work with diverse individuals and problem-solve is also crucial.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: This position frequently requires physical demands such as running, walking, sitting, standing, lifting up to 80 lbs, carrying up to 55 lbs, pushing/pulling, climbing, balancing, reaching, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and fine finger dexterity.
