Position Overview

**TITLE:** Special Education Instructor for Autism

**DEPARTMENT:** Special Education

**STATUS:** Certified, Exempt - Contract

**POSITION SUMMARY:** This role entails overseeing a classroom dedicated to elementary students with autism. The individual in this position is tasked with designing, organizing, and executing a suitable educational program tailored for an elementary setting that fosters student development and growth. The instructor must exhibit expertise and adaptability in engaging with students from various cultural, socioeconomic, and ability backgrounds. Participation in professional development and extracurricular activities is also expected.

This position is integral to the elementary team and reports directly to the principal.

**KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:**
  • Develop, prepare, and deliver engaging lessons to promote active learning.
  • Guide, motivate, and assess students' educational progress, modifying strategies as necessary to enhance learning outcomes.
  • Maintain comprehensive and accurate records of student progress and complete all required documentation.
  • Contribute to meetings with department staff, school personnel, parents, and community members as needed.
  • Manage student behavior and uphold discipline in alignment with district policies.
  • Train and oversee paraeducators to assist in the educational development of students.
  • Utilize relevant technology to support and tailor instruction effectively.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.
**EDUCATIONAL AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:**
  • Kansas Teaching License: Elementary Handicapped Unified, Adaptive Special Education (PreK-12), or Functional Special Education (PreK-12).
**REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:**
  • Ability to effectively engage with students from diverse cultural, economic, and ability backgrounds.
  • Capability to establish and maintain productive working relationships with administrators, colleagues, and staff.
  • Exceptional verbal, written, and listening communication skills.
  • Strong collaborative team player.
  • High levels of motivation, responsibility, and confidentiality.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision in a dynamic environment.
  • Skill in organizing and prioritizing multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Proficiency in compiling, organizing, and analyzing data.
  • Competence in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Outlook, etc.).
**PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:**

This role necessitates the ability to perform medium work, which may involve exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, 30 pounds frequently, and 10 pounds constantly to move objects. Visual acuity is required for tasks involving computer usage and other instructional technologies. The position also demands frequent grasping, talking, hearing, reaching, standing, walking, and feeling, with occasional balancing, kneeling, crouching, crawling, lifting, pushing, and pulling. A significant degree of fine motor skills is necessary for executing essential duties. The work environment is generally safe and clean.
