Advanced Respiratory Care Practitioner - Duke Raleigh Hospital, part of Duke University Hospital - Night Shift

Schedule: 7 PM to 7 AM - 3 shifts per week

Duke Raleigh Hospital seeks to employ a Respiratory Care Practitioner who embodies our mission of Advancing Health Together .

Job Overview

The responsibilities of this position include executing diagnostic and therapeutic clinical procedures as outlined in the Respiratory Care Services scope of practice, adhering to physician directives, and concentrating on adult patient demographics.

Key Responsibilities
  • Administer oxygen and aerosolized medications utilizing Intermittent Positive Pressure Breathing (IPPB), Intermittent Aerosol Therapy (IAT), Metered Dose Inhalers (MDI), and incentive breathing devices.
  • Perform nasotracheal and artificial airway suctioning, CPR, bag-mask ventilation, pulse oximetry monitoring, arterial blood gas punctures, and bedside pulmonary mechanics.
  • Conduct diagnostic cardiopulmonary procedures, pulmonary function assessments, EKGs, and cardiac monitoring.
  • Ensure the correct setup, safety, and operational readiness of all equipment and supplies necessary for patient care.
  • Comply with infectious disease protocols during patient care activities.
  • Understand pharmacological indications, dosages, and responses to adverse drug reactions.
  • Provide education to patients, families, physicians, nurses, and other healthcare team members.
  • Carry out other relevant duties as required.
Required Qualifications

Education

Respiratory Care Practitioner (RCP)

  • Completion of a 2-year Associates Degree program accredited by AMA or its equivalent.

Advanced Respiratory Care Practitioner (RCP)

  • Completion of a 2-year AMA-accredited respiratory care program (Associates Degree or equivalent).
  • Maintain annual skill and safety certifications.
  • Meet North Carolina annual licensing requirements for Continuing Education Units (CEUs).

Experience

Respiratory Care Practitioner (RCP)

  • No prior experience required.

Advanced Respiratory Care Practitioner (RCP)

  • Six months to one year of clinical experience following graduation from a respiratory care program.

Licensure and Certification

Respiratory Care Practitioner (RCP)

  • North Carolina State Licensure or Provisional License, National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) Certification.
  • If CRT, obtain RRT within 6 months of employment.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification and any other relevant institution-specific certifications.

Advanced Respiratory Care Practitioner (RCP)

  • North Carolina State Licensure, National Association for Respiratory Care (NBRC) Registry (RRT), BLS, ACLS, PALS, and NRPS if applicable.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Understanding of clinical decision-making and patient interactions based on specific age groups.
  • Validation/certification of competencies for assigned duties.
  • Maintain annual skill, safety, and CEU requirements in North Carolina.
  • Strong customer service and communication skills.
  • Regular interaction with patients of all ages, family members, physicians, nurses, and other healthcare team members.
  • Job performed in all hospital areas, involving carrying a 20-pound emergency airway bag and activities like walking, running, climbing, and bending.
