Job Summary

The Intellectual Property Lead - Vaccines will play a pivotal role in shaping the company's intellectual property strategy, particularly in the vaccines therapeutic area. This position will be responsible for leading and managing a team of patent attorneys, scientists, and life sciences lawyers to deliver enterprise-wide IP strategy supporting CSL Behring's vaccines activities.

Key Responsibilities
  • Strategic IP Leadership
    • Develop and implement IP strategy to advance the company's vaccines portfolio and create commercial business value and security.
    • Lead and oversee the global management of intellectual property matters, including patent portfolio management, patent prosecution, and patent defense.
  • Team Management
    • Manage a team of patent attorneys, scientists, and life sciences lawyers to deliver IP strategy and advice to management and other stakeholders.
    • Develop and implement talent cultivation and coaching programs to empower team members and drive business outcomes.
  • Business Partnership
    • Partner with senior leadership, commercial, and R&D divisions to assess and lead IP challenges relating to vaccines development and commercial products.
    • Provide counsel and IP advice to CSL Behring's Strategy team and vaccines leadership team on IP-related matters.
  • Regulatory Compliance
    • Ensure compliance with intellectual property laws and regulations, including patent and regulatory exclusivities.
    • Develop and implement strategies to safeguard inventions and manage patent portfolios in accordance with national and international law and guidelines.
  • Communication and Collaboration
    • Communicate effectively with diverse groups, including senior management, external partners, and internal stakeholders.
    • Build and maintain strong relationships with key internal functions, including IP, commercial development, clinical development, and global regulatory affairs.
Requirements
  • Education
    • Masters degree in life sciences discipline (chemistry, biochemistry, biotechnology) or a related field, preferably a PhD, or equivalent experience in scientific research.
  • Experience
    • Qualified Patent Attorney or IP lawyer admitted to practice in the US or equivalent legal qualifications and experience in Intellectual Property.
    • At least 12 years post-qualification experience in Intellectual Property.
    • At least 5 years of experience with life science technologies and operations of in-house IP teams with a background in a technical field relevant to CSL Behring, especially vaccines.

    • Excellent organizational and planning skills and ability to deliver work to tight deadlines.

    • Superior verbal and written communication skills, adept at simplifying complex concepts for business partners.
    • Strong interpersonal skills with the capacity to effectively interact with diverse groups, key internal functions, senior management, external partners, and build great relationships with people across a global business.
