Overview:

Our pediatric facility caters to children aged 5 to 12 years and adolescents aged 13 to 19 years who are experiencing psychiatric emergencies.

Children exhibiting life-threatening, destructive, or disabling behaviors, or those requiring constant monitoring and evaluation, qualify for admission.

The program focuses on assessing and stabilizing psychiatric symptoms, aiming to enhance the highest level of functioning through tailored treatment plans.

The primary objective is to facilitate a swift return to home or the least restrictive care environment, complemented by comprehensive aftercare strategies.

The anticipated duration of stay in this program ranges from three to ten days.

Responsibilities:


Nurses in this healthcare setting are tasked with overseeing the admission process for all patients entering the facility, managing and supervising routine assignments of unit staff, administering medications as required, and maintaining daily communication with physicians regarding the patient's physical and mental health status. Participation in multidisciplinary meetings and effectively de-escalating crisis situations on the unit are also essential duties.

Essential Functions


Completion of the admission process for patients, which includes: Nursing Assessments, Medical Checklist/Physical Health/Nutritional screening, Medication List, Medication Administration Record, vital signs, height/weight, transcribing physician orders, AIMS, and admission notes.


Observing patient behavior during group activities, documenting observations in patient records, and interacting with patients to evaluate needs, ensuring accurate information transfer during shift changes and treatment team discussions.

Supervising nursing care while overseeing routine task assignments of RNs, LPNs, CNAs, and Behavioral Aides/Specialists.

Administering medications while adhering to the Six Rights of medication administration.

Providing medication education to patients and their families, including information on uses and potential side effects. Monitoring patients for possible side effects of medications and reporting findings to the physician.

Communicating effectively with the physician regarding the patient's physical and mental condition.

Collaborating with the multidisciplinary team and actively participating in the development of the interdisciplinary treatment plan.

Performing venipuncture for laboratory requests, monitoring results, and reporting any abnormal findings to the physician.

Providing emergency care as necessary (CPR, MindSet, PRN medications), in accordance with AltaPointe policies and procedures.

Assisting patients with personal care needs (bathing, toileting, and other hygiene-related tasks).

Demonstrating flexibility to work in any unit as needed based on facility requirements and supervisor direction.

Exhibiting the ability to recognize crisis situations and effectively de-escalate or resolve them.

Assisting with Seclusion and Restraints in line with AltaPointe policies and procedures.

Demonstrating proficiency in child/adolescent/adult competencies.

Adhering to professional ethical standards.

Seeking clinical supervision and consultation as needed.

Welcoming and implementing suggestions for improvement.

Actively working to enhance clinical skills.

Documenting in a timely manner per AltaPointe policy.

Ensuring documentation is clear and concise, detailing patient issues, treatment goals, and services rendered.

Maintaining accurate and timely updates to forms, notes, logs, and other relevant documentation.

Exhibiting courteous and respectful attitudes towards patients, visitors, and colleagues.

Treating patients with care, dignity, and compassion.

Respecting patient privacy and confidentiality.

Physical Requirements

This role involves frequent standing, sitting, and walking in intervals of 5 to 10 minutes.

However, there may be occasions requiring extended pacing with patients (duration may vary), and the ability to alternate between sitting and standing as dictated by patient behavior.

There may be instances of forward bending from the hips while kneeling to reach to the side.

Occasionally, the ability to perform a full squat/lunge from a standing position is necessary.


There may be times when maintaining back extension while lying on the stomach with body weight on hips and legs is required.

This position may need to be held for several minutes.


Occasionally, the ability to place body weight on one knee and one elbow on the same side is necessary.

Occasionally, the ability to kneel and reach towards the floor on the same side is required.


Ability to lift up to 10 pounds from the floor to various levels, including overhead, is occasionally required during shifts.

Ability to lift up to 50 pounds to assist with Activities of Daily Living, as needed. Capability to lift up to 50 pounds from the floor to waist height.


A strong grip is necessary to use keys for opening doors throughout the facility and to maintain constant contact with a patient during restraint procedures or other hold techniques.

Pushing/pulling force of up to 25 pounds may be required occasionally during shifts.

There may be times requiring rapid ambulation to assist colleagues with a patient in a restraint procedure

(Example:

jogging/running up to 0.1 miles).


Therapeutic activities may occur inside or outside the facility; therefore, some tasks may necessitate physical engagement in play or games.


Qualifications:
Current Alabama Registered Nurse License.

AltaPointe mandates that all new hires be fully vaccinated against COVID-19.
