The current opening is within the Engineering Division, which will be filled at either the Civil Engineer or Senior Civil Engineer level; however, this recruitment will also be utilized to establish a Citywide list for potential future openings.

Civil Engineer Responsibilities:

Under general supervision, a Civil Engineer engages in professional civil engineering tasks, including design layout and plan evaluation. Additionally, the Civil Engineer may oversee the work of technical or paraprofessional Engineering staff. This position serves as the entry-level classification within the professional engineering career path.

Assignments in Engineering and Water Resources offer opportunities for independent judgment and initiative in the design, management, and assessment of projects. Work is conducted under the direct supervision of a registered engineer, who provides guidance in project management practices, engineering methodologies, and principles.

The Civil Engineer classification differs from the Senior Civil Engineer classification, with the latter requiring registration in the state of Arizona as a Civil Engineer and handling more complex and varied professional engineering assignments with minimal supervision.

Some employees in this classification may advance to Senior Civil Engineer through noncompetitive promotion upon meeting specific performance and registration criteria as a Professional (Civil) Engineer in Arizona.


Senior Civil Engineer Responsibilities:

A Senior Civil Engineer, under general supervision, performs advanced and responsible professional engineering work. Employees in this classification execute a full range of professional engineering tasks.

Furthermore, a Senior Civil Engineer directs and reviews the work of lower-level professional and paraprofessional engineers, technicians, inspectors, surveyors, and others.

Assignments are broad in scope and necessitate the use of independent judgment and initiative in making complex technical decisions.

A Senior Civil Engineer may specialize in specific areas (e.g., storm drainage, sewer and water systems, roadways, special improvement districts, construction administration) and serve as the City's technical authority in that domain.

Some employees may progress to this classification through noncompetitive promotion upon fulfilling specific performance and registration requirements as a Professional (Civil) Engineer in Arizona.


Minimum Qualifications for Civil Engineer:

Any combination of training, education, and experience equivalent to graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Construction Management, Architecture, Landscape Architecture, or a closely related field.


Special Requirements:

Must possess a valid Class D Arizona Driver's License by the date of hire or promotion.


Preferred Qualifications:

Some (6 months - 1 year) civil engineering experience is preferred. Certification as an Engineer-in-Training (EIT) is also desirable.


Minimum Qualifications for Senior Civil Engineer:

Registration as a Professional Civil Engineer is required.


Special Requirements:

Must possess a valid Class D Arizona Driver's License by the date of hire or promotion. Registration as a Professional Civil Engineer in Arizona is required within six months of hire.


Substance Abuse Testing:

Due to the safety-sensitive nature of this classification, individuals shall be subject to pre-employment or pre-placement alcohol, drug, and/or controlled substance testing as outlined in City policy and procedures.


Preferred Qualifications:

Six months of supervisory experience is preferred.
