Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Patient Financial Counselor to join our team at Trinity Health. As a Patient Financial Counselor, you will play a critical role in determining patient liability, providing financial assistance, and securing payment for healthcare services.

Key Responsibilities
  • Estimate patient liability on accounts and evaluate credit histories and other resources.
  • Counsel patients on cost of treatment, insurance benefits, resources for payment, and financial assistance.
  • Secure and document payment arrangements.
  • Verify and update patient demographic information on registration and billing systems.
  • Audit bills for accuracy.
  • Collect deposits and payments.
  • Assist potentially eligible patients in completing forms for Medicaid, CMHS charity care, and other sources of financial assistance.
  • Review delinquent accounts to ascertain previous collection action taken, status, and extent of insurance coverage and potential collectibles.
  • Contact those who have not responded to payment requests. Monitor monthly payers.
  • Re-bill, COBS, and original bills third parties to charges posted after the billing and transfer date.
  • Answer inquiries and resolve complaints concerning account collection.
  • Process adjustments to Accounts Receivable, including refunds.
  • Prepare reports and maintain account activity logs.
  • Act as liaison with other Trinity Health service areas, family members, and physicians regarding billing requirements, financial assistance, and coordinates activities to avoid reimbursement delays.
  • Maintain good rapport and cooperative relationships. Approach conflict in a constructive manner. Help to identify problems, offer solutions, and participate in their resolution.
  • Maintain the confidentiality of information acquired pertaining to patients, physicians, employees, and visitors to Trinity Health Hospitals. Discuss patient and hospital information only among appropriate personnel in appropriately private places.
  • Assume responsibility for performance of job duties in the safest possible manner, to assure personal safety and that of coworkers, and to report all preventable hazards and unsafe practices immediately to management.

Requirements
  • Requires high school diploma or equivalent and one year of specialized training.
  • One to two years progressively more responsible related work experience.
  • Knowledge of basic accounting principles and patient billing procedures.
  • Interpersonal skills necessary to communicate effectively with patients and families when determining financial status, establishing payment arrangements, and collecting accounts, as well as with insurance companies and other Patient Financial Services department staff.
  • Analytical skills necessary to calculate patient liability, income status, and solve problems related to credit and collection matters.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of SJMH patient accounting systems and accounts receivables.
