The next Chief Student Affairs Officer (CSAO) will step into a pivotal role at Bates College during a transformative period, collaborating with a dynamic new President and building upon the strengths of a thriving student affairs division at an institution deeply committed to community, inclusion, belonging, academic excellence, intellectual exploration, and engaged citizenship.
The CSAO will be an integral part of a high-performing and collaborative senior leadership team, contributing to the strategic direction of the College. Working closely with the President and other senior leaders, the CSAO will provide vision, leadership, and guidance to enhance the overall student experience at Bates.
Position Summary:
Bates College is seeking an energetic, innovative, and collaborative Chief Student Affairs Officer with a strong commitment to excellence and integrity. Candidates should demonstrate a serious dedication to the values and objectives of Bates' private, residential, liberal arts education, possess a history of effective organizational leadership, and have the ability to cultivate a campus climate that values community, belonging, and mutual respect. The ideal candidate will be an experienced higher education professional with robust organizational and managerial skills.
The successful candidate will embody accessibility and presence within the Bates community and will possess many of the following experiences and attributes:
- Proven success and senior-level experience in higher education or another student-focused institutional context, providing vision, leadership, and direction that enhances and supports the quality of the overall student experience.
- A strategic thinker who can effectively communicate and facilitate access to resources, support, and opportunities for students through the student affairs division; anticipate potential challenges; and maintain strong relationships with campus stakeholders.
- The ability to lead and manage a team of skilled professionals effectively while collaborating as a member of the President's senior staff.
- A high degree of authenticity, visibility, accessibility, and openness to students.
- A demonstrated commitment to equity and diversity in all its forms, including a record of individual action and institutional leadership.
- Experience in crisis management and response.
- A commitment to shared governance, with experience engaging with and gaining the confidence of partners and stakeholders across an academic institution.
- Understanding the partnership between student affairs professionals and faculty members, earning their trust and respect in furtherance of a shared commitment to student success.
- A clear commitment to fostering a collaborative working environment, with prior success in supporting the development and professional growth of colleagues.
- Exceptional communication skills and the ability to speak confidently and persuasively to diverse audiences, including students, parents, faculty, alumni, donors, staff, and trustees.
