About the Role

Ferris State University is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Dining Operations Manager to join our team. As a key member of our Dining Services department, you will play a critical role in ensuring the smooth operation of our food service facilities.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist in managing all aspects of food production and service in assigned units, ensuring compliance with departmental policies and procedures.
  • Direct, train, and monitor the development of departmental staff assigned to areas of responsibility, promoting a culture of excellence and customer satisfaction.
  • Monitor Dining Service employees, AFSCME, and part-time employees, ensuring compliance with contract and employment policies and practices.
  • Ensure that the overall unit operation meets established standards in customer service, safety, quality, efficiency, timeliness, cleanliness, and attractiveness.
  • Maintain current knowledge of policies, procedures, and bargaining unit agreements, implementing them as appropriate.
  • Implement policies and procedures for the administration and operation of Dining Services, ensuring seamless execution.
  • Respond to problems arising from customer complaints, personnel, staffing, scheduling, food preparation, and other areas of concern.
  • Review menus, requisitions, supplies, and production records, making forecasts and changes as needed.
  • Balance cash drawers and maintain sales records, preparing reports as required.
  • Ensure cash handling complies with University policies and procedures.
  • Monitor all POS systems, ensuring accurate and efficient transactions.
  • Assist with scheduling, training, and supervision of unit employees, promoting a positive and productive work environment.
  • Supervise the maintenance, repair, and security of unit facilities and equipment, ensuring optimal performance.
  • Participate in meetings with other Dining Services administrators, fostering collaboration and communication.
  • Reports to an assigned Dining Services Unit Manager, providing regular updates and insights.
  • Fills in and assists with multiple dining locations as assigned, demonstrating flexibility and adaptability.
  • Maintains the confidentiality of designated information, adhering to University policies and procedures.
  • Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with University policies and applicable laws, promoting a culture of compliance and integrity.
  • Demonstrates an understanding of diversity, equity, and inclusion, especially in working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and community members.
  • Supports, promotes, and develops University student enrollment and retention initiatives, fostering a student-centered environment.
  • Provides training and insight for special dietary requirements, ensuring inclusive and accommodating service.
  • Operates university motorized vehicles in a safe manner while performing job duties, adhering to University policies and procedures.
  • Must obtain ServeSafe certification within 6 months of employment, demonstrating a commitment to food safety and quality.
Requirements
  • Associate's degree in Food Service Management or related field, or four years of additional full-time required experience in lieu of post-secondary education.
  • Two years of food service experience, including recent supervisory responsibilities.
  • Required Licenses and Certifications: ServeSafe certification.
  • Physical Demands: Office Environment, Bending, Carrying, Inclement Weather, Moving, Reaching, Sitting, Twisting, Driving, Lifting, Pulling/Pushing, Repetitive movement, Standing.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Associated Degree preferred.
  • Culinary experience preferred.
  • Recent supervisory experience preferred.
  • ServeSafe certification.
Skills and Abilities
  • Communicate effectively.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of all areas of dining service operations and equipment.
  • Supervise and coordinate the work of others.
  • Possess knowledge of food production techniques and methods.
  • Plan and utilize materials and supplies effectively and economically.
  • Perform basic mathematical computations and bookkeeping tasks with accuracy.
  • Solve problems and make on-the-spot decisions using good judgment.
  • Work weekend and/or evening shifts as necessary.
  • Demonstrate leadership skills.
  • Demonstrated commitment, experience, and understanding for diversity, equity, and inclusion.
