Child Life Specialist

About the Role:
The Child Life Specialist at Akron Children's Hospital is responsible for maximizing the physical and emotional health, as well as the social, cognitive, and developmental abilities of children, and minimizing the potential stress and trauma that children and their families may experience.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop and implement comprehensive Child Life services to support the physical and emotional needs of pediatric patients.
- Provide preparation and facilitate adaptive coping strategies for patients and families for medical procedures and other healthcare experiences.
- Offer education and emotional support to patients and families, advocating and communicating their needs to multi-disciplinary staff.
- Provide education related to child development and the impact of hospitalization on children and their families.
- Supervise and train students and volunteers to ensure the highest level of care and support.
- Demonstrate expertise in providing care for the physical, psychosocial, educational, and safety needs of pediatric patients.
Requirements:
- Experience in a clinical setting as a Child Life Specialist is preferred.
- Experience working with all levels within an organization is required.
- Experience in healthcare is preferred.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Proficiency in MS Office or similar software is required, with experience with Epic software or similar EMR software preferred.
Education and Experience:
- Education: Bachelor's degree in Child Development, Child Life specialization, or related field is required; Master's degree is preferred.
- Certification: Certified Child Life Specialist within one year of employment is required. Current Health Care Provider BLS training is required.
- Eligible candidates are required to have completed a 600-hour clinical Child Life internship under the supervision of a Certified Child Life Specialist.
- Years of relevant experience: 0 to 2 years is preferred.
