Position Overview:
We are seeking a Senior Laboratory Operations Leader to join our Drug Substance Development team within the Department of Neurotoxin & Biologics Process Sciences (NBPS).
Role Summary:
The selected candidate will be a vital member of the NBPS team.

This position primarily involves leading a team and managing fermentation, harvest, and purification processes at scales up to 50L in Bio-Safety Level 3 laboratories, focusing on drug substance development and optimization studies for both natural and recombinant proteins.

The ideal candidate will take on a significant leadership role within the laboratory.

This includes directly overseeing laboratory personnel while also engaging in hands-on biologics process development.

This essential role encompasses the management of daily laboratory operations and a variety of tasks related to fermentation and purification activities.

The preferred candidate will possess a robust understanding and practical experience in production fermentation, harvest/clarification, and purification of biologic proteins.

The successful individual will lead the team, conduct laboratory work, foster productive collaborations across scientific disciplines, and demonstrate a strong motivation to innovate and excel in a dynamic, collaborative environment.


Key Responsibilities:

Laboratory Management:
Ensure the NBPS's BSL3/BSL2 laboratory infrastructure is maintained for effective and efficient operations.
Possess technical expertise in specialized and commonly used laboratory equipment and techniques.
Oversee R&D laboratory activities, including routine and specialized operations.

Act as the primary contact for the BSL3 lab team, managing service requests, assigning tasks, providing training, and fostering a culture of safety and compliance.

Engage in hands-on responsibilities for daily operations, including capital planning and expenditures, lab equipment management, and procurement of lab consumables.

Anticipate, troubleshoot, and resolve laboratory-related issues, including emergency responses.
Provide strategic guidance and technical support to the lab operations team for day-to-day activities.
Demonstrate meticulous attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and adherence to Good Documentation Practices (GDP).

Exhibit proficiency in 5S Lean management of laboratory operations and be accountable for developing and enforcing continuous 5S practices.

Ensure overall performance across lab operations aligns with project requirements.

Safety Oversight:


Responsible for maintaining a safe laboratory environment for staff and visitors, including enforcing safety protocols, delivering safety training, and ensuring the availability of safety equipment.

Possess a solid understanding of laboratory safety procedures and chemical disposal guidelines.

Develop and implement Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and departmental policies to enhance laboratory efficiency.

Conduct regular safety inspections and audits of BSL3 and BSL2 labs to identify and mitigate potential hazards.
Educate laboratory personnel on safe equipment and material handling.
Collaborate with key stakeholders to promote a proactive safety culture.

Work with the Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S) department to ensure compliance with all safety regulations.


Leadership and Supervision:
Manage laboratory staff, including recruitment, training, and supervision.
Demonstrate leadership in planning work assignments, setting priorities, and scheduling.
Conduct operational performance reviews and establish objectives for the NBPS team.
Exhibit proven leadership skills in mentoring junior staff.
Address personnel issues professionally and promptly.
Effectively lead and recruit talent for the team.
Develop a clear service model with defined roles and responsibilities.
Optimize lab resources through collaboration with stakeholders.

Budget Management:
Oversee the laboratory budget, allocating funds for equipment and supplies.

Collaborate closely with procurement and lab teams on capital and operational expenditures.

Qualifications: A BS or MS in Pharmaceutical Sciences, Biochemical/Chemical Engineering, or a related field, with a minimum of 14 years of experience in R&D and/or Biopharma manufacturing.

Ability to operate effectively at both operational and strategic levels.
Demonstrated ability to improve lab operations and practices.

Extensive experience in R&D and GLP laboratory environments with adaptability to change.

Strong customer service orientation with a track record of anticipating departmental needs.
Proactive with a proven ability to take ownership and deliver results in dynamic environments.

Ability to collaborate across functions and align stakeholders toward common solutions.

Excellent communication skills to convey information effectively and maintain cooperative relationships with cross-functional teams.

Motivated to work collaboratively and drive continuous improvement initiatives.
