ABOUT BOYS & GIRLS AID

Established in 1885, our mission is to ensure that every child in foster care has the opportunity to grow up in a nurturing family environment. We emphasize the importance of healthy relationships, investing in connections, and creating optimal opportunities for children. As part of the Boys & Girls Aid team, you will play a vital role in advocating for social justice for youth in foster care, those involved with the juvenile justice system, or those facing homelessness.

Every team member contributes significantly to the value we provide to those we serve. We recognize that the treatment of our employees directly impacts their performance. A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A YOUTH HOUSING SUPPORT SPECIALIST:

The Youth Housing Support Specialist evaluates referrals to assess eligibility and make placement decisions for clients participating in the transitional living program (TLP) funded by the Oregon Department of Human Services (DHS). This role requires strong communication skills to effectively serve both internal and external stakeholders while managing multiple priorities and maintaining confidentiality.

You will collaborate with a team of professionals and community partners to empower youth in their daily lives and prepare them for future success. This includes teaching essential skills in communication, relationship-building, personal empowerment, and overall well-being. You will provide services that enable youth to live independently, including crisis intervention, minor counseling, and life skills development. This may involve meeting with youth in their homes and working outside of standard office hours. You will assess the needs of youth and coordinate various services such as education, vocational training, mental health support, addiction services, and transportation for appointments and hearings. Additionally, you will work alongside the Residence Manager to facilitate skill-building groups and advocate for youth to access community, county, state, and federal resources, while educating them on self-advocacy and eligibility requirements.

QUALIFICATIONS FOR A YOUTH HOUSING SUPPORT SPECIALIST

  • A Bachelor's Degree in a relevant field (social work, psychology, sociology) or two years of experience working with transition-aged youth.
  • Proven understanding of the transition-aged youth demographic and the ability to enhance young adults' capacity for independent living. Familiarity with systems of care for youth and families, including child welfare, juvenile justice, mental health, and substance abuse treatment, is essential.
