Position Overview

Objective:

The Clinical Laboratory Specialist is responsible for executing comprehensive patient care within a laboratory setting, ensuring optimal patient safety and minimizing medical errors. This role involves validating ambiguous results or samples and repeating procedures as necessary. The specialist must demonstrate proficiency across various laboratory disciplines, including chemistry, hematology, microbiology, serology/immunology, urinalysis, and phlebotomy. Routine phlebotomy services may be performed to enhance laboratory efficiency.

Key Responsibilities:

Technical Functions:

  • Conducts all pre-analytical processes pertinent to the specific laboratory section, ensuring accurate order entry, appropriate specimen collection, and correct processing/transportation.
  • Confirms orders when necessary.
  • Validates non-patient information (e.g., collection time).
  • Manages unresolved orders and troubleshoots as required.
  • Collaborates with providers and nursing staff to clarify ambiguous orders prior to testing.
  • Ensures availability and acceptability of specimens for add-on tests and generates corresponding orders.
  • Handles the collection, reception, and processing of specimens: Verifies correct labeling upon receipt, assesses specimen appropriateness, and takes corrective actions as needed. Documents unacceptable specimens and notifies relevant parties. Prioritizes specimen processing based on established protocols. Aliquots specimens according to guidelines.
  • Executes all analytical testing relevant to the specific laboratory section, adhering to established protocols and standard operating procedures (SOP).
  • Maintains the integrity of testing systems: Conducts preventive maintenance on instruments/equipment as per schedule. Validates reagents and supplies upon receipt and prior to use, ensuring unacceptable items are removed from service. Monitors inventory levels and notifies senior staff when minimum thresholds are reached. Performs and documents necessary quality control (QC) for test system performance, evaluates QC results, and implements corrective actions as needed.
  • Prepares specimens for testing: Conducts any necessary pretest specimen preparations in accordance with protocols (e.g., microbiology plating, cell cultures, filtering, extraction, separation, elution, absorption, etc.). Transfers or ships specimens to approved testing locations following SOPs.
  • Conducts tests: Prioritizes testing based on assignments or established priorities, ensuring completion within defined turnaround times (TAT). Adheres to age-specific protocols and effectively responds to workflow changes by coordinating multiple tests or adjusting work to accommodate urgent requests or fluctuations in volume. Monitors daily workflow to ensure service level compliance.
  • Performs technical review and interpretation: Reviews results for completeness, accuracy, and consistency within defined testing systems. Evaluates test results and provides precise interpretations, correlating with other patient data as necessary. Identifies unusual test results and initiates appropriate follow-up actions. Adheres to established protocols for notifying critical values and handling results requests.
  • Troubleshoots and resolves issues: Identifies performance problems within the testing system and implements corrective measures. Recognizes when unresolved issues require escalation and follows up accordingly. Monitors pending logs to ensure timely completion or cancellation of tests.
  • Stores post-test specimens: Safely stores specimens and related materials according to established protocols. Retrieves specimens and materials as needed.

Post-Analytical Functions:

  • Implements all post-analytical processes relevant to the specific laboratory section, ensuring accurate reporting of results within established timeframes, appropriate retention of specimens, and correct billing for tests performed.
  • Validates and reports results: Confirms results according to established procedures and performs necessary computer functions for result release. Reviews electronic or printed reports, identifying and escalating issues as required.
  • Amends reports: Corrects and amends erroneous reports in accordance with established procedures.
  • Responds to inquiries: Addresses requests for information while adhering to confidentiality protocols. Recognizes when unresolved inquiries require escalation and takes appropriate action.
  • Stores documents and records: Maintains documents and records according to established protocols.

Universal Responsibilities:

  • Ensures operational quality: Adheres to written standard operating procedures (SOP), operates instruments/equipment according to protocols, and follows required quality system responsibilities. Meets departmental proficiency and competency standards. Participates in training new employees and students, operational reviews of new SOPs, and new test development and validation.
  • Ensures operational safety: Follows all safety procedures, utilizes personal protective equipment (PPE) as required, and maintains a clean and organized workspace.
  • Provides excellent service: Answers phone inquiries as needed, maintains patient confidentiality, and assists patients and visitors as required.

  • Schedule: Monday-Friday, 8AM-5PM

Qualifications:

  • Education: Associate degree or higher in Medical Laboratory Technology (Required)
  • Certification: American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) or American Medical Technologists (AMT) Certification
  • Experience: Clinical laboratory experience is preferred.
