Lead and oversee the Public Works Field Services Division, which is tasked with the management and upkeep of transportation and stormwater systems within Sarasota County. This role encompasses the supervision of work planning and scheduling, maintenance of roads, bridges, signage, drainage systems, and more. The position includes 4 direct reports and manages a team of over 130 personnel dedicated to enhancing community safety and aesthetics.

High-level leadership and strategic oversight of the Field Services Division within the Public Works Department, responsible for the operation, maintenance, repair, and construction of public transportation and stormwater infrastructure in unincorporated Sarasota County and the City of Sarasota.

  • Participates in regular Director's Leadership meetings.
  • Keeps the Director and Managers updated on potential operational challenges.
  • Coordinates issue resolution and promotes shared objectives with Managers across Public Works and other departments as necessary.
  • Provides leadership and direction for the Division; responsible for developing annual budgets, acquiring necessary resources, managing labor relations, and fostering a positive workplace culture.
  • Builds community partnerships through exceptional customer service.
  • Oversees procurement and contract management activities.
  • Establishes and maintains standardized business practices to ensure consistent departmental performance.
  • Supports initiatives for APWA Accreditation.
  • Advocates for the County's mission, vision, and values to benefit the community.
  • Encourages strong working relationships by empowering employees and promoting excellence, efficiency, and teamwork.
  • Engages with County Administration and Commissioners regarding matters before the Board of County Commissioners, and may present during public meetings.
  • Develops and implements an effective organizational structure for the Division.
  • Maintains a positive demeanor as a representative of Sarasota County Government.
  • Ensures compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and policies.
  • Fosters professional development, workplace diversity, and team cohesion among staff.

Note on Substance Screening: This position requires successful completion of a pre-employment substance screening. Failure to pass will result in disqualification from employment for five (5) years.

Candidate Profile

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Public Administration, Business Management, or a related field AND eight (8) or more years of relevant experience.
  • - OR - Master's Degree in one of the aforementioned fields AND six (6) or more years of relevant experience.
  • Four (4) or more years of supervisory or management experience.
  • A valid Florida Driver's License is required at the time of hire.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Advanced professional certification is highly desirable.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Experience in transportation and stormwater operations, maintenance, and related equipment.
  • Experience managing operational budgets.
  • Effective public speaking and communication abilities.
  • Proven ability to manage personnel and projects with a focus on customer service, innovation, and productivity.
  • Experience with labor union management.
Additional Information

Starting Salary Range: $110,000 - $121,000, commensurate with experience.
