ABOUT THE ROLE

This position is available throughout Riverside County.

The Riverside County's University Health System - Public Health is actively seeking qualified candidates for the role of Nutrition Education Specialist.
Under general oversight, this role involves assisting and engaging in all aspects of community and/or patient health and nutrition education initiatives, including planning and assessment; and performing additional related responsibilities as necessary.

The Nutrition Education Specialist plays a crucial role in the design, execution, and evaluation of health education initiatives within key functional areas of the Department of Public Health, Department of Mental Health, or Office on Aging. This position is distinct from the entry-level Health Education Assistant I, where incumbents receive foundational training in community health and nutrition education principles, including program design and assessment.

The individual in this role will be responsible for delivering both basic and advanced nutrition counseling, evaluating applicants and participants for WIC eligibility, and leading group educational sessions. The selected individual will collaborate closely with the site supervisor and will serve as the nutrition education lead for their designated site, which includes training staff on monthly educational curriculum and ensuring the site is adequately supplied with essential nutrition education resources.

Ideal candidates will hold a Bachelor's or Master's Degree in Nutrition or a related field such as Dietetics, Food and Nutrition, or Food Science. Bilingual candidates are highly preferred.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

• Assess community health and/or patient education requirements and contribute to the planning, development, and evaluation of necessary programs.

• Aid in the formation and maintenance of coalitions, advisory councils, and other partnerships by identifying and engaging community resources and leaders to foster cooperation and encourage participation in evaluating community health needs, implementing educational initiatives, and promoting healthy practices.

• Assist in organizing and participating in workshops, seminars, and discussion forums to advocate for health and health education programs; support the orientation of departmental and other County department personnel involved in health education initiatives regarding program objectives and methodologies.

• Plan and conduct educational sessions on various health and nutrition subjects, including the objectives and services of the Department of Public Health, Department of Mental Health, Office on Aging, or Riverside County Regional Medical Center for schools, community organizations, and agencies.

• Develop bulletins, periodic reports, and educational materials; prepare press releases and special features on assigned health topics; maintain and utilize a list of media contacts.

• Create exhibits, posters, and displays for presentations at meetings, conferences, clinics, and public events; assist community groups in organizing and developing various community health education projects.

• Support the preparation and adjustment of appointment schedules and patient/participant flow.

• Provide health and nutrition education to individuals based on assessed needs.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's degree in community health education, public health, health sciences or services, health education, home economics, foods and nutrition, kinesiology, family or consumer sciences, behavioral or social sciences, or a closely related field.

OR

Experience: One year of experience as a Health Education Assistant I with the County of Riverside.

Knowledge of: Principles, methods, and techniques of health education, including the creation of educational materials and the dissemination of information to the public through various media; community resources and their functions; techniques for collecting and compiling data relevant to health education program planning and evaluation; common health issues affecting target groups in the community, their causes, and prevention strategies; group dynamics and human behavior.

Ability to: Develop public educational materials such as pamphlets, posters, displays, and exhibits; communicate ideas clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing; deliver impactful oral presentations to public and professional audiences; organize and facilitate meetings, training sessions, and seminars; establish and maintain effective working relationships with a diverse range of community agencies, organizations, and individuals.
