Position Overview:

The Clinical Nutrition Specialist (CNS) plays a vital role in delivering nutrition education to participants and patients across various programs at San Ysidro Health Center, both in clinical and community environments. The CNS is tasked with conducting comprehensive nutrition evaluations, formulating nutrition prescriptions, and developing tailored nutrition care strategies in alignment with established nutrition practice standards.

Key Responsibilities:

Clinical Duties: 60%
  • Conduct thorough nutrition evaluations to identify nutritional risks.
  • Facilitate Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT) sessions, including follow-up appointments.
  • Generate nutrition prescriptions adhering to nutrition practice standards.
  • Develop and document individualized nutrition care plans.
  • Assess and monitor the effectiveness of MNT interventions.
  • Collaborate with the healthcare team to ensure coordinated patient care.
  • Serve as a nutrition consultant for the Comprehensive Perinatal Services Program (CPSP).
  • Create culturally and linguistically appropriate nutrition and health education materials.
  • Deliver nutrition education training as required.
Community Engagement: 40%
  • Refer high-risk participants to appropriate providers for MNT and offer counseling and support as needed.
  • Conduct nutrition assessments, identify nutritional risks, create nutrition care plans, and prescribe WIC food packages.
  • Provide both group and individual nutrition and breastfeeding education.
  • Distribute breast pumps in accordance with agency policies.
  • Facilitate referrals to other programs as necessary.
  • Engage in program linkages, referrals, and outreach initiatives.
  • Offer nutrition education training and mentorship as needed.
Additional Responsibilities:
  • Adhere to established departmental policies, procedures, and quality assurance standards.
  • Promote professional development through participation in educational programs, literature review, and workshops.
  • Attend required meetings and contribute to committees as directed.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
Qualifications:

Experience:
  • At least 3 years of experience as a Clinical Registered Dietitian Nutritionist.
  • A minimum of 2 years providing diabetes education.
  • At least 1 year of experience in prenatal nutrition.
Education:
  • Bachelor's degree in Nutrition or a related field.
  • Completion of a Didactic Internship.
Certifications/Licenses:
  • Registered Dietitian Nutritionist credential from the Commission on Dietetic Registration.
  • Preferred: Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist (CDCES) credential.
Skills:
  • Bilingual proficiency in Spanish and English.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
Technical Skills:
  • Commitment to serving a diverse, low-income population.
  • Familiarity with community health center environments is desirable.
  • Proficient in computer applications.
  • Able to thrive in a fast-paced work setting.
Equipment Utilized:
  • Standard office equipment, including computers, video conferencing tools, telephones, and copy/fax machines.
Working Conditions:
  • Involves prolonged periods of sitting, standing, and walking.
  • Work environment may be noisy, with young children and infants present.
  • May require lifting up to 20 lbs. with appropriate equipment.
  • Schedule may include some evenings and Saturdays.
  • Potential travel to other San Ysidro Health sites may be required.

Pre-employment requirements include I-9 verification, physical examination, positive background and reference checks, completion of application, new hire orientation, and compliance with mandated vaccinations and boosters.
