Department Overview: The College of Humanities and Social Sciences - English Classification: 9-month Instructional Faculty Job Category: Instructional Faculty Job Type: Full-Time Location: Fairfax, VA Workplace Type: Hybrid Eligible Compensation: Salary commensurate with education and experience Background Check: Yes About the Department: The English department at GMU provides a range of programs, including a BA in English with various concentrations, a BFA in Creative Writing, multiple MA programs, and three terminal degrees, including a PhD in Writing and Rhetoric. Position Overview: The selected candidate for this term faculty position will become part of the faculty in the Writing and Rhetoric concentration and the Professional and Technical Writing Minor, distinct from the Composition Program, with a primary focus on professional and technical writing at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. This role also includes teaching general education courses on Ethical AI. Key Responsibilities: The primary responsibilities include instructing ENGH 210: Equitable AI and our core undergraduate course in professional and technical writing (English 388). Additional opportunities may arise to teach further technical communication courses at the undergraduate level. Appointment times will depend on budget and performance. The appointee may be required to teach courses in person and/or in a distance format based on departmental needs. Teaching responsibilities entail:
  • Delivering specified courses in accordance with faculty expectations outlined in the workload policy and faculty handbook;
  • Maintaining an average instructional workload of 4 courses per term, with potential summer teaching opportunities;
  • Utilizing various teaching formats including in-person, online, and hybrid classes;
  • Instructing students on modern tools and methods related to Artificial Intelligence (AI) and relevant coding and structure to explore ethical and equitable applications of AI; and
  • Implementing strategies in professional and technical communication that align with contemporary academic and practical dialogues.
Departmental Service responsibilities include:
  • Participating in professional associations relevant to technical communication, writing instruction, information technology, or related fields; and
  • Advising students on academic and professional matters while directing them to appropriate resources when necessary.
Required Qualifications:
  • Master's degree in technical communication or a related field;
    Demonstrated effectiveness in teaching as the lead instructor in technical communication courses delivered in various formats (online, hybrid, and/or in person); and
  • Ability to collaborate with a diverse student population.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • PhD in technical communication or a related area;
  • Previous teaching and/or research experience with Artificial Intelligence (AI), including AI coding and ethics, within a communication or humanities context;
  • Experience teaching in a collegiate or university setting;
  • Background in professional practice as a technical communicator or similar role (editing, UX, design, etc.);
  • Experience advising students on academic, professional, and technical writing matters in diverse environments; and
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
