Team Overview
At OpenAI, our mission is to ensure that artificial intelligence serves the benefit of all humanity. To achieve this, we prioritize effective engagement with policymakers within the national security sector. Our Global Affairs team is dedicated to fostering genuine, collaborative relationships in these critical areas. We strive to ensure that insights from policymakers and stakeholders shape our initiatives and work alongside them to promote regulation, industry standards, and the safe and beneficial development of AI technologies. The U.S. Policy and Partnerships team, a vital part of the Global Affairs team, focuses on establishing and nurturing strong, trusted relationships with government officials, legislators, and other external stakeholders. Our aim is to engage comprehensively with the U.S. AI policymaking community while providing both technical and policy expertise. Additionally, we collaborate closely with the broader Global Affairs team to build partnerships with the public sector and other organizations that could leverage our tools.
Role Overview
We are looking for an outstanding national security generalist to join our agile, high-impact team. This role is essential in enhancing our efforts to connect with, educate, and collaborate with national security and law enforcement officials across the U.S. government. Recognizing the significance of long-standing relationships with government stakeholders, this position will play a crucial role in establishing that network from the ground up.
Reporting to the National Security Lead, the National Security Associate will contribute to policy development and manage our relationships with key stakeholders in the national security domain. This position requires close collaboration with colleagues on the Global Affairs Team and coordination with other departments within the organization (e.g., legal, safety, communications). The ability to navigate complex issues swiftly and collaboratively in a dynamic environment is essential.
As OpenAI continues to evolve with the release of industry-leading research and tools, you will encounter new challenges as the organization’s needs change. Daily responsibilities may include communicating with U.S. government representatives, representing OpenAI at various events, developing and implementing engagement strategies on pressing policy issues, or preparing company leaders for public representation.
We seek a self-motivated and innovative individual with experience in building and nurturing relationships with national security stakeholders, along with an understanding of technology-related policy formulation. Experience in government, knowledge of technology-related regulations, and technical skills related to generative AI models are highly desirable.
This position is based in Washington, DC and may involve frequent travel to engage with key stakeholders. We provide relocation assistance to new hires.
You will excel in this role if you:
- Are knowledgeable about national security issues and emerging AI technologies.
- Are an enthusiastic and effective coalition builder who enjoys working independently while also thriving as part of a high-performing, peer-led global team.
- Enjoy coordinating and facilitating complex collaborative projects among diverse stakeholders while being an accountable individual contributor.
- Are passionate about the potential of technology and the future of artificial intelligence, while being mindful of its associated risks.
We are looking for a combination of:
- Established network and credibility with national security stakeholders.
- Demonstrated knowledge of federal government rules, institutions, and processes, as well as key policy issues and debates related to AI.
- Significant experience in technology policy is advantageous.
- Proven skills in coordinating and facilitating multi-stakeholder collaboration.
- Sound judgment and exceptional personal integrity.
- Ability to operate effectively in fast-paced and flexible environments through rapid cycles of analysis, decision-making, and action.
- Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills, with the capacity to convey complex technical and policy concepts to diverse audiences.
- Strong strategic thinking, problem-solving, and project management capabilities.
- A track record of effectively collaborating with cross-functional teams and aligning a diverse range of internal and external partners.
- Genuine concern and understanding of the impact of technology on society.
