Job Summary

The New York State Civil Service is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Administrative Law Judge/Assistant Administrative Law Judge to join our team. As a key member of our organization, you will be responsible for conducting administrative hearings and rendering decisions for the adjudication of moving traffic violations, fatal accidents, persistent violators, false statements on Motor Vehicle documents, or driving without insurance.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct administrative hearings and render decisions for the adjudication of moving traffic violations, fatal accidents, persistent violators, false statements on Motor Vehicle documents, or driving without insurance.
  • Conduct hearings involving charges of violations of the Vehicle and Traffic Law and the Commissioner's Rules and Regulations by commercial establishments such as repair shops, dealers, inspection stations, driving schools, commercial bus drivers and school bus operators.
  • Prepare cases for review by the Motor Vehicle's Appeals Board.
  • Render decisions for violations of the Navigation Law by boaters, and the Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation Laws by operators of snowmobiles.
  • Decisions are also influenced by the Zero Tolerance Program as well as new regulations concerning emission inspections.

Requirements

  • Admission to the NYS bar and two years of post-licensure professional legal experience.
  • 12 months as an Assistant Attorney 2, or Admission to the NYS Bar and 12 months of subsequent satisfactory legal experience in the trial of issues in courts of record or in the conduct or trial of adversary proceedings, quasi-judicial in nature, before a governmental department or agency.
  • One year of permanent, contingent-permanent, or 55 B/C service allocated to a Grade 21 or higher eligible for transfer and deemed administrative under Section 52.6 of the Civil Service Law.

  • Three years' experience as a New York State Attorney.
  • Strong research and writing skills.
  • Eager to learn new subject areas.
  • Demonstrated sound judgment.
  • Excellent oral communication skills.
