About the Role

The Lead Industrial Hygienist will be responsible for leading the development and implementation of enterprise-wide Industrial Hygiene programs and policies across American Water through the Corporate Health and Safety framework. This role will work closely with the state Health and Safety teams to ensure compliance with American Water standards, regulatory requirements, and best practices related to industrial hygiene, occupational health and safety.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain an enterprise-wide Industrial Hygiene (I.H.) strategy and program.
  • Define IH resources and competencies, develop training programs, mentor, and support professional development of the IH network.
  • Work with State H&S, Engineering, Facilities, and Operations staff to design and implement IH controls to ensure containment and ease of operations.
  • Ensure IH sampling plans use scientific and sound risk-based approaches.
  • Administer and function as SME for the IH qualitative and quantitative assessment database, and provide necessary review, analysis, approval, and reporting of IH evaluations.
  • Coordinate training for all new or inexperienced users and interpret results for management as needed.
  • Interpret and advise the business on AW procedures and guidance for the proper handling and use of potent chemicals, reagents and materials, and physical hazards in the treatment and production areas, plants, and manufacturing facilities.
  • Proactively assess data from Occupational Toxicology research and independently published sources to communicate/implement actions to ensure the health and safety of operations staff.
  • Develop leading and lagging metrics to monitor IH performance to proactively intercede and resolve deficiencies.
  • Participate in engineering reviews to address Industrial Hygiene and employee exposure control.
  • Assist with complex IH control solutions and risk management for sites and projects.
  • Audit and assess industrial hygiene programs for compliance and improvement.
  • Monitors emerging health and safety legislation and IH technologies and adjusts IH programs, standards, and controls to ensure compliance.

  • Leadership presence (e.g., ability to deal effectively and maintain collaborative relationships with Company senior management and other key stakeholders).
  • Knowledge of OSHA, Federal, State and Local regulations as applicable utilities, construction, and related industries.
  • Knowledge of and familiarity with health and safety program management and OSHA regulatory requirements for construction and general industry with increased opportunities to apply expertise across disciplines or organizational areas.
  • Knowledge of water utility industry strongly preferred.
  • Environmental Regulations.
  • Department of Transportation regulations.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in safety management, safety engineering, industrial hygiene, occupational environment health and safety, or a related field.
  • Equivalent role related work experience in lieu of a degree will be considered.
  • A minimum of 12 years of experience required in safety management, utility, construction, or industrial setting that provides the knowledge and exposure to the fundamentals, principles and concepts of the Health & Safety function.

Travel Requirements

  • Up to 30% travel.

Certifications and Licenses

  • CSP (Certified Safety Professional).
  • Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH).
  • Valid, State Driver's License and ability to successfully pass a motor vehicle background check.

Work Environment

  • In addition to a regular office environment, will occasionally have to work in construction environments, near moving mechanical parts and in outside weather conditions.
  • May include an environment where possible exposure to physical hazards, weather extremes, wet and/or humid conditions, and chemicals.
