Position Overview for the Health Information Specialist:

  • Chart Management: Oversee substantial volumes of patient documentation by reviewing and confirming completeness, consolidating duplicate records, and systematically organizing patient charts and files. Gather both current and historical records from nursing units and distribute charts to relevant patient care areas.
  • Collaboration with Physicians: Inform physicians regarding incomplete records, obtain and verify incomplete records for finalization, log physician visits, and maintain precise suspension logs and lists.
  • Record Organization: Establish and route chart folders for new patients, gather all current discharges, and retrieve archived charts from various departments. Ensure the accurate and timely organization and filing of medical records.
  • Reception Responsibilities: Execute reception duties such as filing reports, retrieving charts, and assisting physicians or visitors as necessary, while upholding patient confidentiality standards and departmental regulations.

Required Skills for the Health Information Specialist:

  • Educational Qualifications: A High School Diploma or General Education Diploma (GED) is mandatory.
  • Technical Skills: Strong verbal communication and telephone skills are essential. Familiarity with Windows and Microsoft Office applications is required. Knowledge of Electronic Health Records system applications is a plus.
  • Medical Acumen: Understanding of medical terminology, chart evaluation, and medical record management. Capability to interpret and comprehend complex instructions, correspondence, and medical documentation.
  • Interpersonal Abilities: Proficient in managing detailed confidential information and fostering positive working relationships with physicians, clinical ancillary departments, coworkers, and other healthcare professionals.
