Job Overview:

Under the guidance of the Newborn Screening Molecular Branch Manager, the incumbent will leverage extensive expertise to autonomously execute intricate molecular genetic methodologies. This includes processes such as DNA extraction, electrophoresis, polymerase chain reaction (PCR), real-time PCR, automated DNA sequencing, and DNA sequence analysis. The primary objective is to detect mutations associated with various genetic disorders, utilizing established protocols developed by the DNA Analysis Team.

This role carries significant responsibility for ensuring the precision of laboratory tests conducted on human specimens. The individual will independently assess and troubleshoot complex results in accordance with Standard Operating Procedures (SOP). Responsibilities also encompass equipment maintenance, specimen and reagent preparation, and other essential laboratory support tasks.

The position involves conducting quality control (QC) for DNA studies and applying substantial knowledge of procedures to uphold analytic accuracy and testing continuity.

Additionally, the role requires performing computer database searches, managing specimen logins, and maintaining accurate records of results. Active participation in the safety program is also expected.

Duties are carried out independently with considerable discretion, adherence to established protocols, and application of scientific knowledge and independent judgment.

Work hours and laboratory assignments may vary, with all personnel required to participate in a rotating Saturday schedule.

Key Responsibilities:

Regular attendance and adherence to agency leave policies while performing additional assigned duties.


Responsibility 1:

Execute complex molecular genetic procedures including DNA extraction, electrophoresis, PCR, real-time PCR, DNA sequencing, and DNA sequence analysis, adhering to laboratory protocol guidelines for identifying mutations related to various genetic disorders. (50%)


Responsibility 2:

Adhere to QC guidelines, monitoring reagents, materials, and assays to ensure testing accuracy and continuity. Complete all required QC documentation in a timely manner. (10%)


Responsibility 3:

Ensure proper specimen receipt, storage, and tracking of testing status. Accurately enter patient demographic information and test results using various computer software applications. (10%)


Responsibility 4:

Conduct preparatory and supporting tasks for DNA testing, including reagent preparation and equipment maintenance. (5%)


Responsibility 5:

Maintain and troubleshoot laboratory equipment, ensuring cleanliness and compliance with safety regulations. (10%)


Responsibility 6:

Foster teamwork and communication among colleagues, promptly reporting abnormal test results and conducting training as necessary. (5%)


Responsibility 7:

Perform database searches for relevant laboratory testing information and assist in preparing technical reports and research papers. (5%)


Responsibility 8:

Identify and address delays in specimen testing and result reporting, consulting with supervisory personnel as needed. (5%)


Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
General understanding of laboratory operations, quality control, and human molecular genetics. Proficiency in laboratory safety protocols and sample handling techniques. Strong communication skills, both oral and written. Ability to follow detailed instructions and utilize laboratory equipment effectively. Competence in computer usage, including database searches. Capacity to collaborate effectively with team members and maintain a positive work environment. Ability to adhere to standard operating procedures and maintain accurate records. Skills in aseptic techniques and problem-solving within the laboratory context.
