We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Molecular Biologist to join our team at the Texas Department of Aging & Disability Services. As a key member of our laboratory team, you will be responsible for performing complex molecular genetic procedures, including DNA extraction and RT-qPCR, to detect genetic disorders in newborn screening specimens.
Key Responsibilities:- Perform Highly Complex Molecular Genetic Procedures: Conduct DNA extraction and RT-qPCR to detect genetic disorders in newborn screening specimens, following laboratory protocol guidelines.
- Evaluate and Interpret Complex Data: Evaluate and make preliminary interpretations of highly complex data, completing all documentation with required information.
- Perform High Volume Sampling: Perform high volume sampling of filter paper specimens and controls for all newborn screening tests, using technical knowledge to determine specimen acceptability.
- Follow Quality Control Guidelines: Follow QC guidelines and monitor reagents, materials, and assays to ensure accuracy and continuity of testing, cross-checking positive mailed reports to verify abnormal reports are correct.
- Perform Equipment Maintenance: Perform equipment maintenance, calibration, comparison, and troubleshooting, cleaning glassware, laboratory equipment, and bench surfaces as required.
- Prepare Diagnostic Reagents: Prepare diagnostic reagents and/or controls accurately, using aseptic techniques when working with infectious material.
- Collaborate with Team Members: Collaborate with team members to promote workflow, reassign duties, and participate in quality control review, proficiency testing, and equipment performance documentation.
- General Knowledge of Laboratory Principles: General knowledge of laboratory, quality control, and human molecular genetic principles, techniques, and terminology.
- Laboratory Safety: Knowledge of laboratory safety, including sample-handling techniques.
- Effective Communication: Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing, follow written and verbal instructions, and use various items of laboratory equipment associated with work area.
- Teamwork and Leadership: Ability to work in harmony with other team members, lead co-workers by setting a positive work-ethic example, and prioritize and organize detailed tasks to maintain required section timeframes.
This position requires the ability to work in a fast-paced laboratory environment, with frequent exposure to hazardous materials and equipment. The successful candidate will be required to work on a rotating schedule, including Saturdays, and may be required to work in a variety of laboratory settings, including those with high levels of noise and vibration.
