Job Summary:

We are seeking a highly skilled Molecular Biologist II to join our team at the Texas Department of Aging & Disability Services. As a key member of our laboratory team, you will be responsible for performing highly complex and specialized molecular genetic procedures for screening of severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID) and spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) on high volume neonatal screening specimens.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Perform Advanced Molecular Genetic Procedures: Conduct DNA extraction and RT-qPCR following laboratory protocol guidelines for detection of T cell receptor excision circle (TREC), a homozygous deletion of exon 7 in the SMN1 gene, or other markers on high volume neonatal screening specimens.
  • Sample Handling and Quality Control: Perform high volume sampling of filter paper specimens and controls for all newborn screening tests, and follow QC guidelines to ensure accuracy and continuity of testing.
  • Equipment Maintenance and Troubleshooting: Perform equipment maintenance, calibration, comparison, and troubleshooting, and clean glassware, laboratory equipment, and bench surface as required.
  • Documentation and Record-Keeping: Complete all required documentation accurately and in a timely manner, including specimen and reagent preparation, and record-keeping of results.
  • Team Collaboration and Communication: Promote workflow through cooperative interaction, reassignment of duties, and teamwork with supervisors, co-workers, and internal and external customers.
Requirements:
  • General Knowledge: General knowledge of laboratory, quality control, and human molecular genetic principles, techniques, and terminology.
  • Laboratory Safety: Knowledge of laboratory safety including sample-handling techniques.
  • Communication Skills: Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Technical Skills: Ability to use various items of laboratory equipment associated with work area, and use a computer, including data base searches.
  • Teamwork and Leadership: Ability to work in harmony with other team members, lead co-workers by setting a positive work-ethic example, and prioritize and organize detailed tasks to maintain required section timeframes.
Working Conditions:

Work hours/days and laboratory assignments may vary, all staff members will be required to work on Saturday as part of a rotating schedule. The successful candidate will be required to work in a fast-paced laboratory environment, with a focus on quality and accuracy.
