Job Overview:

Under the guidance of the Newborn Screening Molecular Branch Manager, the role requires a profound understanding to autonomously execute intricate molecular genetic methodologies. This includes tasks such as DNA extraction, electrophoresis, polymerase chain reaction (PCR), real-time PCR, automated DNA sequencing, and comprehensive DNA sequence analysis aimed at identifying mutations linked to various genetic disorders.

The incumbent will be accountable for critical decisions regarding the precision of laboratory analyses on human samples. This position demands independent evaluation and troubleshooting of complex results in accordance with established Standard Operating Procedures (SOP). Additionally, responsibilities encompass equipment maintenance, specimen and reagent preparation, and overall laboratory support activities.

Quality control (QC) for DNA studies is a vital function, requiring extensive knowledge of all procedures to ensure analytical accuracy and consistency in testing.

The role also involves performing computer database searches, managing specimen login, and maintaining accurate records of results. Active participation in the safety program is expected.

Responsibilities are executed independently with significant discretion, adherence to established protocols, and application of scientific expertise and independent judgment.

Work hours and laboratory assignments may vary, with all staff required to participate in a rotating Saturday schedule.

Key Responsibilities:

Regular attendance in accordance with agency leave policies and execution of additional assigned duties.

Conducts advanced molecular genetic procedures including DNA extraction, electrophoresis, PCR, real-time PCR, DNA sequencing, and DNA sequence analysis following laboratory guidelines for identifying mutations associated with various genetic disorders.

Evaluates and interprets complex data. (50%)

Adheres to QC protocols and oversees reagents, materials, and assays to guarantee testing accuracy and continuity. Completes all necessary QC documentation promptly and accurately. (10%)

Ensures proper handling, storage, and tracking of specimens, along with accurate entry of patient demographic data and test results. Utilizes software tools to maintain laboratory records for reporting and data presentations. (10%)

Conducts preparatory and supportive tasks for DNA testing, including reagent preparation and maintenance of laboratory materials. (5%)

Performs maintenance and troubleshooting of laboratory equipment, ensuring cleanliness and compliance with safety regulations. (10%)


6.

Fosters teamwork through effective communication and collaboration with supervisors and colleagues. Initiates prompt reporting of abnormal test results. Conducts training as necessary. (5%)


7.

Executes computer database searches for relevant laboratory testing information and assists in preparing technical reports and research documentation. (5%)


8.

Identifies delays in specimen testing and result reporting, notifying supervisors of any issues. Proposes solutions for atypical test results in consultation with senior personnel. (5%)
