Primary Role:

Under the guidance of the Principal, I work to identify and address reading and writing challenges that hinder students' ability to fully engage with the educational curriculum. I oversee all aspects of the campus literacy program and provide targeted intervention services for students diagnosed with dyslexia.

Key Responsibilities:

Program Oversight:

  • Provided assistance and direction to educators in recognizing, documenting, and referring students with suspected reading disabilities.
  • Conducted individual evaluations to identify students with dyslexia and supported classroom teachers in monitoring and referring students facing reading challenges.
  • Collaborated with school leaders, counselors, and educators to create schedules that cater to students' unique needs.
  • Implemented and supervised instructional programs designed to effectively address reading difficulties and dyslexia.
  • Worked closely with classroom instructors and staff to facilitate daily activities and accommodations for students with dyslexia.
  • Delivered professional development and coaching on strategies for supporting struggling readers, dyslexia intervention programs, and dyslexia awareness for both staff and parent workshops.
  • Maintained comprehensive and ongoing records for students receiving literacy and dyslexia instruction.
  • Assisted in the preparation and management of the annual budget for literacy services.
  • Participated in Response to Intervention (RtI), 504, and Admission, Review, and Dismissal (ARD) committee meetings, contributing expertise in reading processes and dyslexia.
  • Oversaw the Section 504 referral process for dyslexia evaluations and collaborated with Special Education personnel for assessments.

  • Developed and coordinated an ongoing evaluation of the literacy improvement program, implementing adjustments based on findings.

Knowledge and Skills:

Knowledge of:

  • The Texas Dyslexia Handbook and effective practices in dyslexia assessment and instruction.
  • Specific training in administering and interpreting diagnostic assessments for dyslexia.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Interpersonal skills, including tact, patience, and courtesy.
  • Methods for collecting and organizing data.
  • Operation of computers and relevant software.
  • District and departmental policies and procedures.
  • Applicable federal and state laws and regulations.

Ability to:

Qualifications:

A Bachelor's degree is required. A valid Texas teaching certificate in Reading/ELAR and training in Orton-Gillingham methodologies are necessary. Certification as a Certified Academic Language Therapist/Practitioner (CALT/CALP) or Licensed Dyslexia Therapist (LDT) is preferred. Special Education certification is also preferred. A minimum of two years of teaching experience is required.

Self-motivated, capable of performing tasks with minimal supervision, managing frequent interruptions, handling multiple complex projects simultaneously, maintaining emotional control under stress, and communicating effectively (both verbally and in writing).

Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:

Ability to lift/carry 15-44 pounds; frequent sitting, standing, walking, climbing, stooping/crouching/kneeling, pulling/pushing, reaching; repetitive hand motions; prolonged use of a computer; clear speaking; occasional travel; and the ability to work irregular and extended hours.
