Position Title: Deputy Sheriff-Jailer

Employment Type: Full-Time

Salary Range: $27.22 – $34.79

POSITION SUMMARY: The Deputy Sheriff-Jailer is a sworn law enforcement role assigned to the Jail Division. This position involves various responsibilities, including but not limited to, processing and documenting individuals brought into custody, overseeing inmate activities, maintaining accurate records, and providing security during court proceedings as necessary. This role requires the application of incarceration methods and procedures pertinent to a county jail setting while fulfilling general jailer responsibilities. The individual will need to exercise discretion and work independently in various situations while performing assigned tasks.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assign inmates to designated cells, conduct regular security checks, perform random searches, and manage the jail control center.
  • Process incoming and outgoing inmates, perform searches, secure personal belongings, and complete necessary documentation.
  • Supervise inmates participating in work release programs and manage trustee activities within the facility.
  • Administer medications as prescribed and maintain accurate records of such distributions.
  • Coordinate visitation schedules for inmates and their families or legal representatives, track court appearances, and provide necessary court security.
  • Operate specialized equipment as required and undertake additional duties as assigned by supervisors.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Minimum of 60 college credits obtained within five years of hire.
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen and at least 18 years of age.
  • Possession of a valid driver's license with a clean driving record.
  • Eligibility to carry a firearm.
  • No felony or domestic abuse convictions.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proficient in computer systems and software.
  • Ability to perform essential job functions effectively.
  • Must obtain and maintain certification as a 'jail officer' as per state regulations.
  • Full-time deputies must reside within specified counties.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Ability to take on responsibilities and demonstrate initiative.
  • Strong organizational and prioritization skills.
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships with colleagues and the public.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends.
  • Demonstrated professionalism, integrity, and good judgment.
  • Specialized training in jail operations or law enforcement is advantageous.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: The position is primarily indoors within a correctional facility, requiring the wearing of a uniform.
