Overview of the Role
The Clinical Nurse Coordinator in Oncology plays a pivotal role in facilitating patient care in collaboration with the Attending Physician. This position is primarily responsible for enhancing communication with patients, managing patient concerns, overseeing symptom relief, and providing education about their medical conditions and treatment options. The coordinator ensures the effective delivery and assessment of healthcare services for patients and their families. Working closely with a multidisciplinary team, the coordinator utilizes clinical outcome data to drive innovative and cost-efficient practices within the healthcare system. All responsibilities are carried out in alignment with the standards and regulations of MedStar Medical Group.
Key Responsibilities
- Delivers both direct and indirect patient care, consistently evaluating the quality and suitability of care provided.
- Collaborates with physicians and various healthcare professionals to ensure timely and effective patient care, aiming for optimal clinical outcomes while considering cost-effectiveness.
- Offers comprehensive patient education on disease management, treatment strategies, and symptom control. The nurse's expertise enables effective triage and assessment, ensuring patients receive the highest level of care throughout their treatment journey.
- Assists patients in navigating insurance authorizations and precertifications for necessary tests as part of their treatment regimen.
- Addresses operational challenges that may hinder patient outcomes, employing problem-solving skills to enhance care delivery.
- Manages incoming calls and patient portal inquiries, providing necessary consultations and follow-up as required.
- Monitors progress and suggests/implements measures for Performance Improvement (PI) initiatives.
- Facilitates new employee orientation and participates in ongoing competency assessments and educational opportunities.
- Engages in additional responsibilities as assigned, which may vary based on departmental needs.
Qualifications
Education Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Nursing is mandatory.
- Master's degree in Nursing is preferred.
Experience Requirements
- 1-2 years of relevant clinical experience is required.
- 1-2 years of experience in ambulatory care and oncology is preferred.
Licenses and Certifications
- Current RN - Registered Nurse licensure in the District of Columbia or Compact State is required.
- CPR certification (including BLS and NRP) from a recognized provider must be obtained within 90 days.
- Additional certifications may be required based on departmental specifications.
- Oncology Nurse Certification (OCN) is preferred within the first year of employment.
