Independent Living, Inc. is a forward-thinking organization dedicated to providing comprehensive cross-disability services. We are currently seeking a Peer Mobile Emergency Response Specialist (PART-TIME) to join our innovative team.

Position Summary

This role involves collaborating with the Emergency Response Clinician to offer support to individuals facing pre-crisis or crisis situations. The specialist will work closely with emergency medical services to deliver education on harm reduction strategies and assist individuals in accessing necessary resources.

Objectives

The primary aim is to minimize repeated emergency calls and equip individuals with the tools and support needed to avert future crises, thereby fostering their ability to thrive within the community.

Key Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with the ILI team and Program Manager to respond to emergency calls related to substance use and co-occurring disorders.
  • Deliver personalized, flexible, and responsive peer support during critical moments for individuals experiencing heightened vulnerability.
  • Facilitate proactive peer engagement and coordinate extensive support by partnering with clinical teams and EMS to create effective intervention plans.
  • Provide on-site peer support in collaboration with clinical team members as situations require.
  • Educate individuals and their support networks on harm reduction strategies.
  • Maintain an up-to-date understanding of community resources available for those seeking additional treatment or services.
  • Inform individuals, families, and community resources about challenges and available options regarding disability services.
  • Assist individuals in navigating and accessing these essential services.
  • Advocate for individuals with substance use and co-occurring disorders to uphold their rights and facilitate access to necessary services.
  • Refer individuals to the Orange County Crisis Call Center for ongoing support and resources.
  • Engage in systemic advocacy by addressing common issues faced by individuals with substance use disorders and collaborating with administrators to find solutions.
  • Promote personal empowerment and self-determination while encouraging the development of independent living skills.
  • Support individuals in identifying and connecting with supportive services.
  • Complete all required reporting and documentation, including statistical reports, by designated deadlines.
  • Participate actively in all meetings and training sessions relevant to the role.
  • Additional responsibilities may be assigned as necessary.
Work Schedule
  • Thursday 2pm – 5:30pm, Friday through Sunday 2pm-10pm
Compensation
  • Hourly rate: $23.45 - $25.00

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in human services or a related field preferred, along with two years of peer coaching or advocacy experience.
  • Certification as a NYCPS (New York Certified Peer Specialist) or CPRA (Certified Peer Recovery Advocate) preferred, or the ability to obtain certification within one year of employment.
  • Personal lived experience with mental health, substance use disorders, or co-occurring services is essential, along with a commitment to self-disclosure as appropriate.
  • Bilingual proficiency in English and Spanish is strongly preferred.
  • Ability to recognize and facilitate connections between consumers and disability-related services.
  • Knowledge of local, state, and national disability issues and community dynamics.
  • Familiarity with community resources such as transportation, recreation, and support groups is highly desirable.
  • Understanding of the substance use disorder service system and recovery processes.
  • Strong grasp of wellness and recovery principles, with experience in leading peer-led groups preferred.
  • Skills in suicide intervention and crisis management are required.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong time management abilities and self-direction are essential.
  • A valid driver's license and reliable transportation are necessary.
