As a Healthcare Support Specialist, you will be instrumental in furthering the healing mission of Deaconess.

Position Summary:

Under the guidance of the Registered Nurse, the Healthcare Support Specialist (HSS) carries out various care activities and related services essential for addressing the personal needs, comfort, and safety of a designated patient demographic. Adhering to ANA Standards of Delegation, the employee must successfully complete job-specific orientation, competencies, and meet or exceed standards as outlined in the performance appraisal criteria. HSSs must exhibit awareness of patient rights in all facets of care and report any concerns to the appropriate personnel. The HSS demonstrates leadership through the coordination of unit equipment and activities, and communicates significant findings or observations to the RN while providing patient care and comfort. Assists professional staff with fundamental life support principles.

Unit Overview:

The Medical Surgical Unit is situated on the 6th floor, Tower B of the Gateway Campus. This unit provides care for patients aged 18 and older with medical-surgical diagnoses that may or may not necessitate telemetry monitoring. The scope of care includes medical-surgical patients experiencing complications from pneumonia, COPD & asthma exacerbations, heart failure, and viral/bacterial infections, with the ability to monitor telemetry. Additionally, care is provided for acute stroke patients and overflow cardiac and renal patients. The unit also houses the central telemetry monitoring station for the entire campus.

Deaconess Gateway Hospital has received certification as a Primary Stroke Center by the Healthcare Facilities Accreditation Program (HFAP). This unit is recognized as a designated stroke unit. Our staff is well-versed in quality care standards, which we consistently meet and exceed. Nurses working in this unit receive training in ACLS, BLS, and NIH Stroke Scale. The diverse range of diagnoses makes this unit an excellent environment for learning.

Qualifications: Certifications/Licenses/Education:

  • Basic Life Support: Health Care Provider certification, to be obtained within six months of hire.
  • Completion of high school education or equivalent (GED) preferred.
  • Successful completion of HSS training as mandated by the care center/unit.
