About the Role

This position is responsible for assisting the clinical provider with patient care, including patient work-ups, diagnostic testing procedures, and administrative tasks. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of ophthalmic practice and patient care, with the ability to assess common safety hazards and take precautions to establish a safe work environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist physicians with patient care by conducting interviews in an efficient and accurate manner, recording chief complaints, documenting ROS and medical and surgical history for each patient.
  • Perform diagnostic testing procedures, including visual acuity, visual field testing, tonometry, refractions, dye disappearance tests, fundus photography, and OCT.
  • Support a safe patient care environment by maintaining all equipment and cleaning used instruments or sending them for sterilization on a daily basis.
  • Effectively manage patient flow and direct physicians to the next patient to ensure patients are seen in a timely manner.
  • Promptly and professionally assist the doctor in patient care.
  • Perform technical workups and special testing, including visual acuity, visual field testing, tonometry, pupil exams, lensometry, dye disappearance tests, fundus photography, and OCT.
  • Utilize proper eyedrop technique and sterility.
  • Communicate with patients and families during their visit regarding follow-up care, surgeries, procedures, changes in schedule, surgery scheduling, etc.
  • Maintain and clean all equipment being used, and report to supervisor if not in working condition.
  • Perform administrative duties, including returning phone or Epic messages to patients, families, and pharmacies, paperwork, telemedicine pre-appointment calls, etc.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality.
  • Maintain certification.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma / GED Required.
  • At least one (1) year of ophthalmic technician experience Required.
  • At least two (2) years of ophthalmic technician experience Preferred.

Skills and Abilities

  • Intermediate proficiency in the performance of the ophthalmic technician work up.
  • Intermediate proficiency in the operation of ophthalmology diagnostic testing equipment.
  • Advanced knowledge of eye anatomy, physiology, and pathology.
  • Basic knowledge of pediatric ophthalmology.
  • Basic knowledge of HIPAA regulations.
  • Intermediate proficiency with electronic medical records (EPIC).
  • Intermediate proficiency with office software (Microsoft Office).
  • Strong verbal and written communications skills.
  • Solid interpersonal skills.
  • Solid organizational skills.
  • Solid critical thinking / problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to collaborate with stakeholders at all levels.

Licenses and Certifications

  • Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) - Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (IJCAHPO) - within 12 months - Required or
  • Certified Ophthalmic Technician (COT) - Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (IJCAHPO) - within 12 months - Required
