About the Role

The Orthoptist will play a vital role in managing the care of patients treated at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia and its satellite offices. This position will involve clinical care in a busy, multidisciplinary environment with a high level of pathology and opportunities for teaching and research.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist pediatric ophthalmology staff with clinical evaluations, including medical and ophthalmic history-taking, vision and sensory testing, and strabismus measurements.
  • Escort patients to and from waiting areas and exam rooms, administer medicated eye drops, and perform retinoscopic and manifest refraction.
  • Document findings accurately in the electronic health record and consult with physicians as needed.
  • Coordinate the timing and sequence of examinations and scheduling of additional tests to facilitate patient flow and care.
  • Independently staff and operate an Orthoptics Clinic for the management of amblyopia, diplopia, and other orthoptic patients.
  • Teach ophthalmic technicians, medical students, and pediatric ophthalmology fellows in ophthalmology clinics.
  • Participate in departmental research activities and present at continuing education offerings for orthoptists, nurses, and technicians.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's Degree Required
  • Prior experience in an ophthalmology clinic Required
  • Orthoptic Certification - American Orthoptic Council - within 12 months - Required
