Job Overview and Responsibilities

Under the guidance of the Mental Health Program Manager, the Lead Psychologist, Supervisor is responsible for overseeing the work of Psychologists. Depending on the specific work environment, this role may also include direct supervision of various support staff, including Office Assistants, Office Technicians, Office Services Supervisors, Health Program Specialists, Psychiatric Technicians, and Recreation Therapists. The position entails directing specialized psychological assessment and treatment initiatives, participating in the recruitment of new personnel, evaluating and providing feedback on research projects, addressing second-level inmate appeals, and offering clinical consultation to custodial personnel. Additionally, the Lead Psychologist may undertake special projects as assigned by the Chief Psychiatrist.

Minimum Qualifications:

License: Candidates must possess a valid Psychologist license issued by the California Board of Psychology, along with an earned Doctorate Degree in Psychology from an accredited institution that meets the criteria outlined in Section 2914 of the Medical Board of California's Business and Professions Code.

Individuals who are not yet licensed by the California Board of Psychology or are in the process of obtaining this license may still be considered for the position. However, they must secure a valid license within three years of their appointment, or their employment will be terminated. For part-time employees, an extension of the licensure waiver may be granted proportionally based on the duration of part-time service, not exceeding five years.
(Unlicensed candidates relocating from outside California who qualify for licensure may be appointed for a maximum of two years, during which time they must obtain their license.)

Experience Requirements:

Candidates must meet one of the following criteria:
1. One year of experience in California state service performing duties as a Psychologist Clinical, Correctional Facility, or Staff Psychologist (any specialty); OR
2. Two years of postdoctoral experience in psychology that includes assessment and treatment, along with training, research, consultation, or program planning in mental health services.

Working Conditions:

This position requires travel as part of the job responsibilities.

Candidates who are removed may appeal this decision with the State Personnel Board.

New employees are required to undergo a background investigation process, including Live Scan Fingerprinting and Tuberculosis testing prior to appointment, followed by annual Tuberculosis evaluations thereafter.
