Optometrist - Comprehensive Eye Care

Job Summary:
The Optometrist will assess patients with a wide range of visual issues, identify ocular diseases, disorders, and deficiencies, and provide treatment as permitted by licensure.
The professional will also refer patients to other qualified Kaiser Permanente specialists for additional evaluation and care as necessary.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conducts comprehensive examinations for patients experiencing various visual challenges using a full array of optometric tools and methodologies.
- Identifies ocular diseases, disorders, and deficiencies, prescribing treatment in accordance with the laws governing practice in the relevant state.
- Prescribes and fits contact lenses as required.
- Evaluates the visual needs of patients with partial sight.
- Recommends low-vision aids such as telescopic and microscopic lenses, magnifiers, and other optical devices to assist low-vision patients.
- Utilizes diagnostic pharmaceutical agents to detect and diagnose ocular pathology under physician orders.
- Employs examination techniques to identify ocular signs of systemic diseases and medication effects.
- Refers patients to other appropriate Kaiser Permanente providers for further evaluation and treatment as needed.
- Engages in departmental and educational meetings, including peer review activities within the medical facility.
- Collaborates regularly with internal medicine, pediatrics, and ophthalmology regarding patient care issues.
- Contributes to the development of eye care educational programs for medical center staff and patient seminars.
- In collaboration with an ophthalmologist, evaluates and manages anterior segment disorders under physician orders.
- Availability for rotating Saturdays (1 Saturday per month) and potential travel to various optometry centers based on business needs.
Basic Qualifications:
- Experience: Not applicable.
- Education: Graduation from an accredited Optometry program.
- Licensure: Valid Optometrist License (Maryland, Virginia, or District of Columbia).
- Certification: Basic Life Support certification from the American Heart Association required at hire.
- Registration: National Provider Identifier required at hire.
Preferred Qualifications:
- At least two (2) years of experience in an interdisciplinary healthcare setting preferred or successful completion of an accredited residency program.
- Completion of an accredited residency in Optometry is preferred.
