Overview

Under general oversight, this role involves assigning, supervising, and reviewing the work of Engineering Draftsmen. The position is responsible for managing computer-aided drafting and design (CADD) systems, operating their control programs, overseeing related digital information, and ensuring systematic archiving of all CADD outputs. The incumbent will assess CADD system performance to enhance operational availability and improve efficiency. Additionally, the role includes developing, updating, and enforcing CADD standards.

Key Responsibilities

The following are essential functions associated with this position: Oversee, schedule, review, and allocate tasks for Engineering Draftsmen. Install, configure, customize, and maintain CADD hardware and software. Ensure proper operation of computers, operating system software, and peripheral devices such as plotters and scanners. Collaborate with the Information Technology Department to uphold data file integrity and security of the CADD system. Develop and manage the CADD file server and Windows network in relation to CADD operations. Coordinate with the Information Technology Department for necessary installations and configurations to support CADD hardware and software. Formulate and implement District CADD drafting standards, enhance productivity through advanced CADD techniques and tools, address user inquiries, resolve issues, and plan user training sessions. Provide recommendations and evaluations for the procurement of CADD hardware, software, and training. Attend CADD-related meetings and perform administrative tasks to support the CADD system and its users. Stay updated with advancements in CADD technology and evolving digital information technologies. Participate in project meetings to represent the drafting team.

Additional Responsibilities

Ensure the acquisition of approved CADD-related equipment and supplies. Develop strategic plans for future enhancements and improvements of the CADD system and associated design software. Perform other duties as assigned.

Work Environment

This position typically operates in an office environment, utilizing standard office equipment and computer workstations, including plotters. Duties may also require visiting areas where personal protective equipment such as hard hats, gloves, ear protection, safety glasses, and/or safety shoes may be necessary.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Comprehensive knowledge of the operation and administration of computer-aided drafting and design systems and Windows network environments necessary for CADD support. In-depth understanding of engineering drafting principles, practices, and techniques in both two-dimensional and three-dimensional formats. Familiarity with the latest versions of CADD software utilized by the District to maximize work efficiency, drawing accuracy, information generation, and digital data management. Advanced comprehension of drafting methodologies for engineered structures, sewers, electrical facilities, civil works, mechanical equipment, process and instrumentation flow diagrams, and architectural details. Strong verbal and written communication skills. Ability to effectively manage and schedule workload. Capability to supervise draftsmen. Proficiency in instructing and training CADD users.

Minimum Qualifications

A bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university in engineering, computer science, or a closely related field is required. A minimum of three years of CADD experience supporting professional architects or engineers, along with one year of experience in the administration of CADD systems, is necessary.

Promotional Requirements

A bachelor's degree in engineering, computer science, or a closely related field. Two years of experience with the District as an Engineering Draftsman III. Civil service status as an Engineering Draftsman III.
