Overview

Under general oversight, this role involves the assignment, supervision, and review of tasks performed by Engineering Draftsmen. The position is responsible for managing computer-aided drafting and design (CADD) systems, operating their control programs, overseeing related digital information, and ensuring systematic archiving of all CADD outputs. Regular assessments of CADD system performance are conducted to enhance operational availability and efficiency. The role also includes the development, updating, and enforcement of CADD standards.

Key Responsibilities

The essential functions of this position are fundamental to the classification and may not encompass all duties for any one role. Responsibilities include: Overseeing, scheduling, and reviewing the work of Engineering Draftsmen. Installing, configuring, customizing, and maintaining CADD hardware and software. This includes managing computers, operating system software, and peripheral devices such as plotters and scanners. Collaborating with the Information Technology Department to ensure data file integrity and security of the CADD system. Developing and managing the CADD file server and Windows network in relation to CADD operations. Coordinating with the Information Technology Department for necessary installations and configurations to support CADD hardware and software. Establishing and implementing District CADD drafting standards, enhancing productivity through advanced CADD techniques and tools, addressing user inquiries, troubleshooting issues, and providing user training. Making recommendations for the procurement of CADD hardware, software, and training. Participating in CADD-related meetings and providing necessary administrative support for the CADD system and its users. Keeping abreast of advancements in CADD technology and evolving digital information technology. Participating in project meetings to represent the drafting team.

Additional Responsibilities

Ensuring the acquisition of approved CADD-related equipment and supplies. Formulating specific plans for future enhancements and improvements of the CADD system and associated design software. Performing other duties as assigned.

Work Environment

Typical office setting, utilizing standard office equipment and computer workstations along with plotters. The role may also require visiting areas where personal protective equipment such as hard hats, gloves, ear protection, safety glasses, and/or safety shoes may be necessary.

Desired Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Comprehensive knowledge of the operation and administration of computer-aided drafting and design systems and Windows network environments supporting CADD. In-depth understanding of engineering drafting principles, practices, and techniques in both two-dimensional and three-dimensional formats. Proficient knowledge of the latest CADD software versions utilized to optimize work efficiency, drawing accuracy, information generation, and digital data management. Advanced comprehension of drafting methodologies for engineered structures, sewers, electrical facilities, civil works, mechanical equipment, process and instrumentation flow diagrams, and architectural details. Strong communication skills, both verbal and written. Ability to effectively manage and schedule workload. Capability to supervise draftsmen. Proficiency in instructing and training CADD users.

Minimum Qualifications

A degree from an accredited four-year college or university in engineering, computer science, or a closely related field is required. A minimum of three years of CADD experience supporting professional architects or engineers, along with one year of experience in administering computer-aided drafting and design (CADD) systems, is necessary.

Promotional Requirements

A bachelor's degree in engineering, computer science, or a closely related field. Two years of experience with the District as an Engineering Draftsman III. Civil service status as an Engineering Draftsman III.
