The Controls Engineer II plays a pivotal role in providing advanced support throughout all stages of a controls project, including concept development, research, estimating assistance, network design, panel layout, troubleshooting devices, PLC and HMI programming, on-site installation, debugging, and post-sales support, with minimal supervision.
A successful Controls Engineer II possesses a high level of expertise in commonly used controls engineering concepts, PLC programming, and best practices. This individual should have the capability to guide and support entry-level Controls Engineers, as well as a readiness to participate in training sessions to enhance their knowledge and skill set in order to progress to higher levels.
Key Responsibilities:- Understanding AC/DC control systems and interpreting component cut sheets.
- Utilizing software for design engineering and PLC programming.
- Troubleshooting systems and effectively communicating status updates verbally and in writing.
- Assisting in the design and delivery of successful controls.
- Creating layouts for electrical circuits and systems for power and control distribution.
- Supporting project Systems Checklist during field installation and startup.
- Developing electrical diagrams with efficiency and accuracy, as well as identifying and rectifying errors in electrical diagrams.
- Taking the lead on controls in project teams.
- Crafting functional system test plans for field commissioning and contributing to technical documents with descriptions of system operations.
- Collaborating effectively with team members, keeping the Administrative Coordinator informed of schedules, and maintaining strong team relationships.
- Performing other duties as necessary.
- A combination of office setting and field work environments.
- Fosters a collaborative, engaging, and success-oriented culture.
- Requires up to 50% travel.
- Extended periods of sitting.
- Repetitive typing and data entry tasks.
- Lifting objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Mandated drug screening and Fit-to-Work physical examination.
This position offers a flexible work schedule with typical office hours from Monday to Friday, between 7am - 4pm or 8am - 5pm. Working hours may vary for on-site job requirements.
Requirements:- Proficiency in multiple programming languages and control device networks for PLCs.
- Ability to interpret written specifications, contract drawings, and develop designs that meet electrical standards and project requirements.
- Strong organizational and multitasking skills, meticulous attention to detail, the ability to work both independently and in a team, and receive and implement direction effectively.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to think critically.
- Self-motivated with exceptional analytical skills.
- Excellent verbal and written communication abilities.
- Readiness to travel to customer sites as necessary and work flexible hours based on project demands.
- Experience Required:
- Proficiency in PLC programming, debugging, and commissioning.
- Experience in plan/hardware design, AutoCAD (AutoCAD E desired), and Microsoft Office Suite.
- Basic knowledge of electrical equipment and local building codes.
- Experience Preferred:
- Practical experience in mechanical and electrical work, troubleshooting, material handling, and understanding of VFDs, Servos, sensors, and Vision Systems.
