Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Protection Systems Engineer to join our team at Avista. As a key member of our Protection and Relaying department, you will be responsible for designing and implementing protection schemes and integration systems for our electrical distribution, transmission, substation, and generating stations.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design and specify protective relays and related equipment for our electric system
  • Develop and perform system fault studies to determine coordination and setting of protective devices
  • Design detailed substation integration schemes and specify substation equipment for remote control, status indication, and data viewing
  • Provide compliance, technical, operational, and analytical support for the Protection and Relaying department on NERC CIP and PRC compliance and protective relay operation analysis
  • Support the development of strategies and internal control documentation for Protection and Relaying department coordination with inter-utility and intra-utility customers
Requirements
  • Bachelor of Science in ABET accredited Engineering Program
  • Minimum of four (4) years engineering work experience required
  • Effective and flexible communication skills
  • Common Tool Technical Proficiency
  • Works with minimal direction
  • Senior Engineer requires the above qualifications in addition to: minimum of eight (8) years engineering work experience required, Professional Engineering License, demonstrated technical leadership within engineering, and demonstrated positive and effective working relationships with internal and external parties
Preferred Qualifications
  • Prefer candidate with at least five years of experience in Systems Protection within the utility/energy industry
  • Power System knowledge or emphasis in a degree and/or ability to utilize engineering application software desired
  • NERC CIP and PRC standards knowledge is desired
  • Experience with SEL relays and protection schemes
  • Computer programming experience in languages such as SQL, Python, and VBA
  • Familiar with database development and database structuring
  • Advanced technical writing abilities
