San Francisco, California, United States Waymo Full time

About Waymo
Waymo is a pioneering company in autonomous driving technology, dedicated to becoming the most reliable driver. Originating from the Google Self-Driving Car Project in 2009, Waymo has been committed to developing the Waymo Driver—The World's Most Experienced DriverTM—to enhance mobility access and prevent traffic-related fatalities. The Waymo Driver is the backbone of Waymo One, a fully autonomous ride-hailing service, and is adaptable to various vehicle platforms and applications. With over one million rider-only trips completed, our technology has autonomously navigated tens of millions of miles on public roads and billions in simulation across more than 13 U.S. states.

Role Overview
The Commercialization Engineering team at Waymo is at the forefront of creating the next generation of infrastructure for driverless vehicles. We tackle complex, real-world challenges such as demand forecasting, pickup/dropoff optimization, fleet management, and field escalation processes. These challenges necessitate collaboration across multiple teams, including technical (mobile applications, cloud systems, and the Waymo Driver) and functional (operations, product development, legal, partnerships, policy, and privacy) domains to build and deliver essential business infrastructure. If you are a proactive, product-oriented engineer with a passion for the future of autonomous vehicles, we would like to connect with you.

Key Responsibilities
As a Senior Staff TLM, you will play a crucial role in developing innovative solutions for automated and optimized fleet management for autonomous vehicles at scale. You will report directly to the TLM for Fleet Infrastructure. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Leading a team of over 8 software engineers within the Commercialization Engineering division.
  • Shaping the short-term roadmap and long-term technical strategy for the team.
  • Collaborating with Operations, Product, Data Science, and other engineering teams to create systems and processes that adapt to evolving business needs.
  • Addressing uncertainty and resolving large, open-ended challenges.

Qualifications
To be considered for this position, you should possess:

  • A minimum of 3 years of experience managing teams in dynamic, high-growth environments.
  • At least 8 years of experience in software development.
  • Familiarity with backend technologies and distributed systems (e.g., C++, Spanner).
  • A results-oriented mindset and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced setting.

Preferred Experience
It would be advantageous if you have experience in:

  • Leading teams through periods of technical or product transformation, particularly in startup settings.
  • Working in cross-functional teams that include non-technical stakeholders.
  • Utilizing Google infrastructure (e.g., Flume, Borg, Protocol Buffers).
  • One or more areas such as logistics, operational tools, or ride-hailing/delivery services.
  • Optimization techniques, operations research, or relevant machine learning methodologies.

Compensation
The expected base salary range for this full-time position across various U.S. locations is as follows. Actual starting compensation will depend on job-related factors, including work location, experience, relevant training, and skill level. Your recruiter can provide more details about the specific salary range for the role or, if applicable, the range for remote work during the hiring process.

Waymo employees are also eligible for participation in Waymo's discretionary annual bonus program, equity incentive plan, and comprehensive company benefits program, subject to eligibility criteria.
