San Jose, California, United States San Jose State University Full time

Department Overview

The Humanities Department at San Jose State University serves as a distinguished hub for innovative, critical, and interdisciplinary exploration and scholarship. We provide three undergraduate degree pathways: the Liberal Studies Teacher Preparation B.A.; the Creative Arts B.A.; and the Humanities B.A., where students can specialize in American Studies, Liberal Arts, or Comparative Religious Studies. Additionally, the Department hosts the Humanities Honors Program, featuring both lower and upper-division Humanities Honors General Education course sequences.

San Jose State University is dedicated to teaching excellence and is recognized nationally for its success in graduating historically underserved populations. With designations as both a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) and an Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander-Serving Institution (AANAPISI), approximately 40% of our student body comprises first-generation college attendees, and 38% are Pell Grant recipients. Consequently, we have been ranked as the most transformational university in the nation.

Curriculum Insights

Our academic programs aim to delve into profound inquiries regarding the essence of humanity, contextualizing these questions within various temporal, spatial, and cultural frameworks, as well as within educational institutions. We investigate themes of conflict, injustice, and inequality, alongside explorations of beauty, meaning, and creative expression. Our curriculum extends the boundaries of humanistic studies into areas such as environmental humanities and digital humanities. The Liberal Studies Teacher Preparation majors receive training grounded in critical humanistic inquiry to prepare them for teaching K-8 students.

Responsibilities

In this role, you will be responsible for instructing a variety of courses within the American Studies concentration of the Humanities B.A., focusing particularly on our foundational lower-division undergraduate courses: AMS 10 Stories Make America, AMS 11 Visions of Democracy, and AMS 12 Introduction to US Popular Cultures. Opportunities may also arise to teach upper-division courses for Humanities majors, such as AMS 169 American Dream and AMS 129 The U.S. in a Global Context. Please refer to the SJSU Course Catalogue for additional details and a comprehensive list of AMS courses.

You will maintain regular office hours for student consultations, collaborate effectively with fellow faculty members, staff, and the department chair, and engage in necessary course grading and assessment activities.

It is essential to demonstrate an understanding of and address the diverse needs of our student population, which includes various ages, abilities, cultural backgrounds, ethnicities, religions, economic statuses, primary languages, sexual orientations, gender identities, and academic preparations. This should be reflected through inclusive course materials, teaching methodologies, and advisement.

All faculty members are required to organize their courses within the Canvas Learning Management System (LMS) and ensure that classes are conducted as scheduled throughout the semester or term, in the designated format (asynchronous, synchronous, bichronous, in-person, or hybrid).

Qualifications

Applicants must possess an ABD (All but dissertation) or Ph.D. in American Studies, Ethnic Studies, Women's/Gender Studies, Literature, History, Environmental Humanities, or a related field, with a focus on environmental humanities and/or human-animal studies.

Demonstrated strong teaching capabilities at the college level and experience or potential for developing effective pedagogical skills are required. Candidates should exhibit an awareness of and sensitivity to the educational objectives of a multicultural student body, as evidenced by cross-cultural studies, training, teaching, or comparable experiences.

Preferred Qualifications

A demonstrated interest in and record of scholarly activities is desirable.

Compensation

Salary and compensation will be determined based on qualifications and experience. For further information regarding salary range placement, please consult University Policy S21-2.

Application Process

To apply, complete the SJSU Online Employment Application and attach the following documents:

  • Curriculum Vitae
  • Cover Letter
  • List of at least three (3) to five (5) references
  • Statement of Teaching Philosophy (optional)
  • Statement of Expertise, including professional experience and a list of courses you are qualified to teach

Employment Conditions

Faculty members must complete required CSU employee training based on their roles. Employment is contingent upon residency in the U.S. and proof of eligibility to work in the United States. Offers of employment may be rescinded if background checks reveal disqualifying information or if candidates are found to have withheld or falsified information.
