Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Sr. Bridge Engineer to join our team at the Commonwealth of Virginia. As a key member of our engineering team, you will be responsible for designing, drafting, and reviewing bridge and structural plans for new construction, maintenance, and rehabilitation projects.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and maintain project correspondence and records, including as-built plans.
  • Prepare contract documents within established timeframes and address questions related to assigned program areas.
  • Provide support to field personnel and guidance on VDOT policy and standards.
  • Prepare preliminary and final design or analysis for bridges and miscellaneous structures in accordance with AASHTO and VDOT guidelines.
  • Compile and maintain automated and written reports and project records for assigned program areas.
  • Review or inspect field work performed by VDOT staff or contractors to ensure compliance with policies, procedures, and standards.
  • Check or review structural plans and shop drawings for conformance with AASHTO and VDOT guidelines.
  • Compute quantities to develop cost estimates and prepare reinforcing steel schedules.
  • Document, enter, and complete required data, such as work orders, schedules, or records.
  • Provide technical assistance to field staff and contractors and provide training.
Requirements
  • Ability to provide training and guidance to other technicians.
  • Knowledge of algebra, geometry, trigonometry, statics, and strengths of materials.
  • Ability to coordinate and work well with others in a team environment.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Knowledge of basic structural engineering design practices and techniques.
  • Ability to read and interpret road and bridge plans and apply design specifications and standards.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering plans and specifications.
  • Knowledge of drafting with emphasis on structural drafting and detailing.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple projects and adjust priorities as needed.
  • Ability to design bridge structure components and complete final bridge plans from preliminary sketches.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing with internal and external customers.
  • Ability to prepare and maintain records and reports.
  • Ability to interpret and apply policies and procedures related to VDOT's program areas.
  • Skill in the use of computers and job-relevant software programs.
  • Ability to perform complex mathematical calculations.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in structural drafting and design, computer-aided design, and plan preparation.
  • Knowledge of CADD and other engineering and structural design software.
