Job Summary:

Student Success Advisor I

Deliver focused, supportive guidance and personal development counseling for a third of the participants in the Student Support Services (SSS) program as mandated by federal legislation. Aid students in cultivating academic competencies, emotional intelligence, and life skills essential for both academic success and post-college life.

Facilitate engagement that enriches the higher education journey, particularly for SSS-eligible students, promoting the attainment of a bachelor's degree and successful career integration.

Employ best practices in counseling, advising, and program delivery tailored to SSS participants.

Assist in the recruitment of SSS participants and the provision of program services, including but not limited to cultural events, financial literacy workshops, and collaboration with other university departments, especially career services and financial management.

Support the Ready, Set, Geaux Bootcamp and investigate best practices for counseling, advising, trauma-informed support, and transition planning. Maintain a foundational understanding of federal legislation and regulations related to TRIO programs and participate in required training sessions. The Student Success Advisor II will lead the coordination and assessment of the RSG Bootcamp, cultural events, and financial literacy training.



Key Responsibilities (Advisor I)

60% Oversee a student-to-advisor ratio of 100:1, ensuring the delivery of services outlined in the SSS grant. Track the academic progress of assigned participants and ensure all students in the cohort receive necessary services. Provide academic, financial (federal programs and financial literacy information), and emotional skill development as specified in the Higher Education Act of 1965, as amended. Offer personal support to SSS participants facing challenges during their transition to college.


Guide students in educational planning by assisting with course selection, recommending appropriate classes, and identifying suitable educational solutions for diverse student needs.

Assist participants with GPA calculations, understanding quality point deficits, transfer evaluations, and advising for Allied Health/Premed/dental programs; facilitate interactions and referrals to other university offices as needed.

Conduct Student Action Strategies (SAS) each semester for assigned students, particularly freshmen and those on academic warning or probation.

Aid students in establishing SMART goals. Provide support with resumes, recommendation letters, and applications for scholarships, graduate programs, and employment opportunities.


Offer case management for students who do not meet academic requirements and guide them toward alternative academic pathways.

Assist students in identifying and implementing the academic and life skills necessary for successful navigation of university life, leading to graduation.

Serve as a resource for students in understanding and adhering to university policies and procedures.

Utilize various electronic and print resources, as well as multiple university databases, to interpret the diverse degree programs offered.

Document interactions in the university's Navigate system and SSS APR database systems.

15% Act as a Recitation leader for the SSS 1001 course. Coordinate the development and delivery of financial literacy programming, ensuring SSS participants have ample opportunities to learn responsible money management skills. Organize cultural and community engagement initiatives, focusing on enhancing cultural development as outlined in the grant application. Facilitate peer mentoring and student leadership programs.

15% Participate in recruitment processes and the onboarding of new staff as assigned. Develop and deliver training for new SSS professional staff regarding TRIO and SSS information relevant to their roles.

10% Collaborate with the SSS Director and other staff to assess the effectiveness of SSS programming using established formative and summative measures. Attend conferences and training sessions as directed by the SSS Director.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree

Preferred Qualifications:

Master's Degree in Counseling, Social Work, Higher Education Administration, or a related field.

One year of experience working with TRIO or similarly diverse student populations at the college level.

Special Qualifications:


As with all university employees, this position entails a responsibility to assist students in accessing necessary services.

Should a student require assistance with emotional, behavioral, or mental health issues, they should be referred to the appropriate services within the Student Health Center.

In cases where a student poses a potential danger to themselves or others, the advisor should immediately contact the Care Team, the Dean of Students, or the appropriate law enforcement agency.

The employee must not create any impression of client or patient confidentiality outside of the rights contained within FERPA.


This position is funded by the Student Support Services grant and is contingent upon the continued availability of funding.

In the event that grant funding for this position is discontinued, the university will provide a 30-day notice prior to the termination of the position due to lack of funding.

Student Success Advisor II

20% Develop and deliver SSS 1001 course content focused on non-cognitive skill development and study skills through lectures and reinforced via recitation sessions. Maintain office hours. Supervise and participate in grading of all individual student assignments. Keep the SSS 1001 Moodle page updated. Ensure class evaluations are completed, submitted to the Director, and participate in a review of the evaluations with the Director to assess course effectiveness and potential changes.

10% Participate in recruitment processes and the onboarding of new staff as assigned. Develop and deliver training for new SSS professional staff regarding TRIO and SSS information relevant to their roles.

10% Plan and execute workshops and cultural engagement opportunities tailored to the needs of SSS students related to career exploration, financial literacy, graduate and professional programs, and personal development.

10% Collaborate with the SSS Director and other staff to assess the effectiveness of SSS programming using established formative and summative measures. Attend conferences and training sessions as directed by the SSS Director.

One year of experience counseling college students at a college/university and a demonstrated ability to provide counseling to marginally prepared, disadvantaged, and/or disabled students.

Years of Experience:
Two years of experience working with TRIO or a group of similarly diverse students at the college level.
