Job Description and Duties

As a Caltrans Heavy Equipment Mechanic, you will be responsible for constructing, inspecting, diagnosing, repairing, and servicing various equipment used in the Department's fleet. You will work in a shop and/or field environment, under the direction of a Highway Mechanic Supervisor and/or Caltrans Heavy Equipment Mechanic Leadworker. Your duties will include completing various records and reports, using computer equipment for various tasks, and assisting in instructing or giving direction to helpers, apprentices, or other employees.

Responsibilities
  • Construct, inspect, diagnose, repair, and service various equipment used in the Department's fleet.
  • Work in a shop and/or field environment, under the direction of a Highway Mechanic Supervisor and/or Caltrans Heavy Equipment Mechanic Leadworker.
  • Complete various records and reports, using computer equipment for various tasks.
  • Assist in instructing or giving direction to helpers, apprentices, or other employees.
Requirements
  • Valid California Driver's License (CDL).
  • Ability to work in inclement weather, including severe cold or heat.
  • Ability to work in a shop and/or field environment, with exposure to dirt, noise, uneven surfaces, hazardous materials, and various temperatures.
  • Ability to travel, rotate, change shifts, work hours, and workdays, and assume responsibility for reasonable safeguards, proper use, and handling of materials and tools, equipment, and facilities at all times.
