Job Overview and Responsibilities

As a participant in the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) Division of Equipment (DOE) program, you will work under the close guidance of a CT Highway Mechanic Supervisor. This role involves acquiring skills and performing increasingly complex tasks related to the repair and upkeep of heavy highway machinery and automotive vehicles. This three-year apprenticeship is designed to prepare you for a competitive journey-level position as a Caltrans Heavy Equipment Mechanic. The eligibility for this position may be determined by your performance on the Heavy Equipment Mechanic Apprentice exam. If you are not currently eligible (e.g., through transfer, permissive reinstatement, or voluntary demotion) and are new to state civil service roles, you must be on the state examination list to qualify for these opportunities. To register for the exam, please search by the classification title.

For inquiries regarding the application process, please reach out to the Human Resources Contact. For questions about the role itself, the Hiring Unit Contact is available to assist you.
