Position Overview

Join the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) as a Heavy Equipment Mechanic Apprentice. In this role, you will work under the guidance of a Highway Mechanic Supervisor, gaining hands-on experience in the maintenance and repair of heavy machinery and automotive vehicles. This apprenticeship program spans three years and is designed to equip you with the skills necessary to achieve journey-level status as a Heavy Equipment Mechanic within Caltrans.

Key Responsibilities

  • Engage in progressively skilled tasks related to the upkeep and repair of heavy highway and automotive equipment.
  • Maintain satisfactory progress in both academic and vocational training components of the apprenticeship.
  • Adhere to safety protocols and utilize Personal Protective Equipment as required.

Eligibility and Requirements

To qualify for this position, candidates must meet specific eligibility criteria based on their performance in the Heavy Equipment Mechanic Apprentice examination. Individuals new to state civil service must be on the examination list to be considered for this role.

Working Environment

This position is based in a shop environment, which may experience significant temperature fluctuations. While most work will be indoors, there may be occasions requiring outdoor tasks. Employees should be prepared for exposure to noise, dust, and chemicals.

Special Conditions

  • Successful completion of a Drug Screening is mandatory prior to employment.
  • A valid Class C driver's license is required for this position.
