Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Assistant Director of Communications to join our team at the Colorado High School Activities Association (CHSAA). The successful candidate will be responsible for assisting the Director of Communications in their duties, which include managing the CHSAAnow.com website, creating content for the website, coordinating and creating posts for CHSAA's social media accounts, being the media liaison for CHSAA, facilitating coaches' rankings and postseason awards, distributing media credentials, coordinating freelancers, as well as supporting the sport administrators with their needs.

Key Responsibilities
  • Communications:
    • Assist the Director of Communications with all things related to CHSAAnow.com, including updating and creating content, such as articles, photos, videos, and championship FAQs for each sport/activity.
    • Facilitate data with the Director of Communications and Assistant Commissioner for Business Intelligence and Analytics as it pertains to sports and activities through polls, rankings, all-state teams, etc.
    • Assist with management of social media accounts (Facebook, Twitter/X, Threads, Instagram and YouTube).
    • Write feature stories and provide in-person coverage (photo, video and written) of major events.
    • Responsible for routine correspondence with athletic/activity directors and member schools.
  • Media Relations:
    • Assist the Director of Communications with all media needs, including writing/posting press releases and coordinating Media Days.
    • Update Media Bulletin, Student Media Handbook and Media Notebook for state events.
    • Facilitate and administer the Media Credential request process by creating, approving and distributing all credentials (media, student media, all-access passes, etc.).
    • Approve postseason radio/video streaming requests. Fill out broadcasting agreements and work with the Director of Finance to make sure media outlets get invoiced.
    • Work to enhance relationships between CHSAA and local, regional and national media outlets.
    • Communicate with media and filter requests to the Director of Communications.
  • General Administrative Duties:
    • Coordinate and manage scheduling and payment of freelancers, including writers and photographers.
    • Answer telephone calls and emails related to the Communications department. Provide routine assistance and information to callers in a professional manner.
    • Make travel arrangements as needed for the Director of Communications.
    • Be available and flexible to take on additional assignments per Director of Communications or CHSAA administrators.
    • Identify and recommend solutions to problems in a timely manner, gather and analyze information, and develop alternative solutions to maximize output.
Requirements
  • Two to three years of athletic communications experience preferred. Some website, social media, media relations, and administrative experience are also preferred. Experience working in sports-related industry, sports information office or conference office highly desirable.
  • Confidence and familiarity working with web technologies and backend website management, including basic HTML and CMS tools (preferably SIDEARM Sports).
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, specifically Excel and Word, as well as Adobe Creative Suite, specifically Photoshop and InDesign.
  • Bachelor's Degree preferred.
What We Offer

This is a full-time salaried position with 40+ hours per week. Attendance at events is part of the job and will include some evenings, weekends, and travel around Colorado depending on the location of events. This is a year-round position with reduced summer hours. Generous PTO and sick leave. Hybrid work schedule with two remote days per week. Annual salary is $50,000. Excellent health, dental, and vision insurance included, as well as an employer supported pension retirement benefit (PERA). This is a non-exempt position.

The Colorado High School Activities Association (CHSAA) is the governing body for all interscholastic activities and athletics throughout the state of Colorado. The mission of the CHSAA is to serve its membership through the advancement of, and the student's participation in, interscholastic activities, which are an integral component and a complement to the educational goals of its member schools.
