National Radio Astronomy Observatory Position Overview:

The National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO) is a renowned research institution dedicated to exploring the cosmos. Our facility operates cutting-edge radio telescopes globally, including the esteemed Very Large Array (VLA) and the Green Bank Telescope.

We are currently seeking an Electronics Engineer to join our Electronics Division at the Domenici Science Operations Center. This role involves collaboration with a skilled team of engineers and technicians focused on the electronic systems that support our various telescopes.


Key Responsibilities:


As an Electronics Engineer at NRAO, you will engage with advanced electronic systems, utilizing a range of testing equipment and engineering methodologies. Your primary responsibilities will include:

  • Troubleshooting intricate issues with electronic assemblies
  • Employing diverse electronic testing tools
  • Utilizing computerized maintenance management systems
  • Traveling to remote telescope locations
  • Coordinating with vendors for parts procurement and maintenance outsourcing
  • Collaborating with team members and NRAO scientific personnel
  • Performing additional duties as assigned

Work Environment:

Work is generally conducted in an office and laboratory setting. Proficiency in operating a personal computer is essential. Occasional work at high altitudes may be required, along with effective verbal and written communication skills. Some travel will be necessary.


Candidate Profile:

The ideal candidate will possess a bachelor's degree in electronics engineering or a closely related field. An advanced degree is advantageous but not mandatory. A minimum of three years of relevant experience is required, with preference given to candidates with four or more years of direct experience, including operational planning within a facility.

Experience with inventory management systems is highly desirable.

  • Self-motivation and ability to work independently
  • Capability to collaborate within a diverse maintenance team
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills
  • General circuit design for analog, RF, and digital systems
  • Proficiency in using testing equipment for DC, AC, and RF circuit analysis
  • Basic networking and digital/FPGA design skills
  • Familiarity with business software (e.g., Word, Visio)
  • Basic software development knowledge (e.g., Python, MATLAB)

Preferred Skills:
  • Experience with engineering software (e.g., schematic capture, circuit analysis)
  • Advanced digital design using HDL and IP blocks
  • Obsolescence management and production engineering expertise
