Job Overview

About This Role
WSP is actively seeking a Lead Project Accountant to join our dynamic team. This position will play a crucial role in providing financial oversight and accounting expertise to project teams.

As a seasoned project accounting professional, you will deliver specialized financial support to Project Managers and their teams, ensuring the effective management of project finances.

Your responsibilities will include developing detailed project work breakdown structures, formulating project budgets, conducting margin analyses, and establishing funding in our financial systems for complex projects.

Key tasks will involve assessing project expenditures, executing cost transfers, and maintaining accurate project data within our systems. You will generate comprehensive project accounting reports for various sectors, including infrastructure and professional services, and collaborate with project leadership to devise corrective strategies for any financial discrepancies.

Your Contributions

In this role, you will manage and scrutinize the collection, recording, and allocation of project costs and revenues, ensuring precise profit and loss calculations while communicating financial performance to management.

You'll be responsible for the complete lifecycle of project accounting, from initiating project accounts to monitoring budgets, validating invoices, and reconciling project payables and receivables.

Engaging closely with Project Managers, you will assist in establishing and updating project budgets, providing accounting recommendations as contract modifications arise.

Additionally, you will produce financial reports and visualizations, ensuring accurate data presentation and conducting analyses on labor costs and other financial metrics for management review.

Monitoring revenue and unbilled balances will be essential to guarantee proper revenue recognition.

You will also oversee access to project accounts and manage expense transfers in accordance with established accounting practices.

Maintaining high-quality standards for project financial records is crucial, and you will apply your accounting expertise to investigate variances and submit reports to management.

Furthermore, you will verify contract details for complex projects, monitor key indicators for financial health, and ensure that draft invoices align with client agreements.

Coordination with subcontractors and contract administrators will be part of your responsibilities, including evaluating subcontractor invoices and managing payment requests.

Responding to client inquiries regarding project expenses and attending project-related meetings to discuss financial statuses will also be required.

You will compile information for audits and collaborate with cross-functional finance teams to execute project work effectively.

Adhering to regulatory requirements and maintaining professional interactions with clients and subcontractors will be essential.

Mentoring junior accountants and remaining updated on project accounting principles will be part of your role.

Finally, you will exercise ethical decision-making regarding company resources and adhere to our Code of Conduct.

Qualifications

To be successful in this role, you should possess a Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Business, or a related field, along with 5 to 7 years of relevant experience in accounting and project management.

Proficiency in project accounting principles and practices is essential, along with strong analytical and communication skills.

Advanced skills in accounting software and MS Excel are required, as well as the ability to work independently and lead junior team members.

Familiarity with Oracle is preferred but not mandatory.
